You know what gets me about these threads? I always want to see the people proposing this shit get to where they're at least cutting metal. The guy who made the AWD DelSol thingie? Yeah, it's not competitive or anything, but it's cool and he actually did it. The people who post this crap before they start cutting metal though seem like the ones who will never actually do it - too much work, too much uncertainty, etc. And now this guy's gone too. Fawkin' buzzkill.

no kidding. I liked the idea of the mitsu trans...

http://erepairables.com/salvage-auction/cars/mitsubishi/lancer+evolution/2006-mitsubishi-lancer+evolution-2239609

lots of suspension pieces too....

So what are the cons to starting a rally project with a salvage car? At least it's only been wrecked once, unlike a used rally car.

I originally thought that out for something on the order of a hotted up K20/K24 powered Open Light Civic - see what I said on the previous page regarding "paper builds". winking smiley

Your paper builds go a lot deeper than mine. I'd really like a datsun 240z with an ecotec, and a T5.

The only really dreamy paper build I have is a single seater, Bike engined, daily driveable, hillclimb/trackday car. 4 tire mounts on the car for hauling track rubber, Removable tool boxes in the sidepods. A true trackday assault vehicle.

Biggest hassle is the re-inspection process depending on your state. Some state troopers give you a really hard time if the car is missing airbags, OEM seats and seat belts, etc. Often best to fix the car first, get it inspected, then tear it apart and build as a rally car.

The Honda one, I almost got so far as to ordering a junk K block and cracked Evo trans case to try to figure out how to make them be friends before I came to my senses (such as they are) and realized that, among everything else, I wasn't really sure I wanted to rally a Civic (even a potential category breaker one) and certainly didn't want to rally something with that much work into it for my first car. Though it might be fun to do as a toy a few projects down the line, you know, after I win the lottery. Training for the 800hp V8 powered AWD Fuckus.... (he said tongue firmly in cheek)

Another reason I have an old car... it has historic license plates. Never needs new tags or safety inspection.

Totally! I didn't even think of some places that have yearly inspections (like Massivetwosh!ts). I was just referencing the process in Colorado you need to go thru to actually get plates for a salvage car after its been repaired.

Oh boy, this will be a doosey. I really need to pay attention.

Even my 'stockish' blue Subaru is a pain in the butt to get fixed. Running all fancy whizzbang JDM bits that were never directly available in the US and when something breaks? Pick up the phone and call overseas and hope someone has something. Like as it sits right now getting torn down for some MYSTERIOUS oil leak that caused the car to self-immolate at BRS last weekend winking smiley Nothing like a 2500 mile round-trip tow for 3 miles of stage. Awesome.

Do this, to at least SEE if you want to DRIVE in rallies.
1. Don't do the AWD thing YET. As others have said, since you are in the NW, you can't rally a turbo car to start. And unless you are going to throw down some car-based driving resume with sustained finishes from actual sanctioning bodies, RA isn't going to give you the time of day on a waiver. It's the way it is.

2. Buy this thing and ship it to you since you love Escorts. http://www.specialstage.com/classifieds/show-ad/?id=447

3. Go rally! Come back and talk to us after you've done 3-5 events (and finished them!). If you make it to 5, you've surpassed *the average number of rallies for any given competitor in their entire competitive history* in the US.

4. AFTER that, start thinking about doing your crazy build. Sell the yellowbird and go crazy on your build. If you don't wad up the el-cheapo Escort in the first 3-5 events, you'll be able to sell if for 70-80% of your investment.

5. (Was going to say Profit! but there is never any profit in rally - especially if you're the one twiddling the wheel.)

And plus these cars are a dime a dozen. The car when I bought it only cost me $200

That is rarely a good reason for pouring 10-15,000 into a car and countless hours---unless the end result is pretty well known great..

Say, you still haven't answered clearly:
Are you imagining building a rally car to enter rallies with?

Fixed...

I just realized the thread title says, "Suggestions, heads up, or kuddhos." I think he wants to hear things like,
Suggestions:
"It'd be killer with a GT3071 ball bearing on the Miata 1.8 bored out and high compression running 1800 cc injectors with E85 bro." Or,
Heads Up:
"Don't use that piece of shit GTX transmission since it's made of glass and you DO NOT have more resources than 25 years of rallyists and racers before you."
Kuddhos:
"Gee this build sure would be swell. Epic waste of time and resources but hey, so is wanking off and it'll be an absolute hit with the trailer park girls!"
