Am I going to need another Volvo?
June 02, 2008 01:44PM
After thinking about things mentioned in my "statistic" thread over the weekend, I am getting curious about this whole G5 thing with a Volvo instead of being the slowest of the open cars in the GVR4. The question is, could I (should I) do it with the 245? Or am I going to need to find a 244/242?

Neither the brick nor the GVR4 has anything in terms of actual rally prep work done at this point, so it's like starting with a fresh page either way, although the brick doesn't have A/C, so I wouldn't miss it there.

So I guess it all boils down to the pros and cons...

PROS:
- Volvo = proven platform
- RWD = no need for stupid restrictors once boosted
- common = easy to work on, source parts, generally inexpensive
- awesome turning radius as it is
- 100% road-ready today

CONS:
- N/A B230F = makes no power
- AW70 = takes no power
- OEM suspension/brakes are weaker than those on the GVR4.
- It's a freaking WAGON.

How would you proceed from here? Thanks

As much as i have faith that at today's levels of competition there is no drawback to a WELL PREPPED Gaylant, I feel there's just no point to Open 4wd any longer.

Just go find a 240. Preferably under 200 bucks. Get a T5 box and a decent turbine housing and call it good for a while.

Here's a 400 buck turbo
June 02, 2008 01:55PM

I need to liquidate, you cant beat this price, dont low blow even more than this or offr trades please, leaving for bootcamp in 2 weeks. price dropped-need it gone b21ft rebuilt and bored to 2.3 new pistons, block shaved for squish-higher compression 9.5:1 rather than 8.1:1, new rods-short block built by Accurate Engines in Kirkland. added intercooler, newer turbo...call for more. the head is off b/c the valve seats need to be reground. I have everything along with some spare parts. $1200 new internals. 15" Virgos with A6 hoosiers for autocross with half a season on them. 425 531 0254
shaved front bumper before paint new engine going in fog lights not there anymore, old bumper mirrors and wipers have been painted since then as well

Aside from the stupidly high compression sounds OK, and since the guy is clearly an idiot (compression is 1st clue, leaving for bootcamp is second clue) you can make a deal. Get it store it here, drive the Suburban up that I have in Anthem, drive this back.

Appreciate the input, John.

I think this is the route I'm going to take. It just makes the most sense. I've got to get to first things first, though. Get the Galant finished for daily duties (free up the garage) and get the Talon cleaned up for sale once the title gets here from Kansas (free up the driveway).

With the Galant pulling daily driver duties, I will be able to sell both the Talon and the 245. I think it would be nice to get $3000 out of the two of them. Assuming I can find another deal like the one you just shared at that point, I can pick up the car and promptly strip it for the cage, to be installed almost immediately.

I've also sent another email to the guy who still owes me about a grand for the built engine he's got in his Eclipse today. Would be nice if I could snap my fingers and have that $4000 in my hot, sweaty meat hooks.

Writing on the wall and all that. I shoulda seen this coming. tongue sticking out smiley

I'd probably advise you to sell the Galant. It's worth more to an afficianado or rally guy than as a daily driver. Keep the Volvo as a DD. You'll end up with more dollars in your pocket to build a new car with. You'll have the wagon as a backup if you need something silly like a wiper motor or fuel pump or , or, or on the rally car.

Perhaps, but the Galant was totaled out by the insurance company after some jerkass made a left across my lane and I nearly folded his POS Kia in half. I might be able to get $1500 for it. I've got more than that into it at this point. I'd rather keep it.

If it were average looking and had a clean title, then maybe I could get enough to make it worth my while, but it's a keeper.

Yeah, even when I'm serious....
Who in their right mind could voluntarily join the US military after we've seen how the servicemen are mistreated, rebuffed, screwed with, where their lives wasted in a pointless never ending low key wars and where they must swear allegiance to uphold the lawful orders of a criminal gang in Washington DC?

If the person is in their right mind, then they have a mind too small.

So......... take cash in 20s.

even if it was totaled I'd say sell the Galant too!

Had one for a few years until 2 years ago. Sold it for 3k in almost perfectly running shape... Only needed an injector resistor pack.

I had over 10k into it probably closer to 15 if I include the car, but I sold it, bought a 2004 Alero as a daily driver and I've never had so much money in my bank account!

The Galant is a real money pit, I doubt you will have any money left to rally if you run it daily! I know for sure I could not. I tried!

Keep the 245, sell everything else, buy a 242 or a 244 and prepare it. That's for sure your best bet.

That's what I would do. Well that's pretty similar to what I am doing! I sold the Galant 2 years ago, scraped a talon about 3 years ago and now I just bought a 242!

Stop being a pussy, Driggs, and rally the goddamned 245! Could you imagine the looks you'd get? Volvo ran 850 wagons as race cars back in the day, why not a 245? Then we wouldn't have to listen to you bitch about no A/C in AZ!

And if no rally, well didn't you mention something about how you and your sister liked the fact that the seats folded down?! smiling smiley

Seriously, there are a good number of 240's in San Diego and Santa Cruz -- perhaps a bit closer to you than Washington. B230's aren't all that bad. I'm running a bone-stock B230 out of a 93 940 Ti. Borrow John's squirter kit if you get caught up in all the turbobricks hype.

Come to Idaho if you're on the fence about 240's. If everything works out, it might be a brick love fest there. Cheers!

word up,

I did a few rallycrosses in my 245 and people would stand up and cheer. It'd be the easiest cage install of all time, and you could drive to the race with your crap in the back. (If you are penny pinching, have you added up the cost of a tow rig and gas?) If you swap out all those giant windows with plastic you could drop at least 150 pounds. just do it, you'll be having way more fun than anyone else.

Re: Am I going to need another Volvo?

There have been recently a couple of VR4s on our Craigslist. Priced around 3k with no engines or other huge issues. There is one on here now for around 5 or 6 K with some issues. Your re-built title shouldn't affect value very much, especially to someone looking for a rally project. http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/car/701198592.html

List it with a stupid price and see. If you get 4k or more very good...if you don't then keep it. Doesn't cost to get an add.

Not selling the GVR4. You guys move too fast! I just came to terms with building a VOLVO instead of my twisted, turbo AWD baby. I'm going to need a little more time before I'm ready to get out of the Mitsubishi/DSM game altogether!

DSM's are like soft drugs. Sure can be fun, Doesn't cost to much, but they are addictive and may, if you are not carefull, to hard drugs like Subaru's. And then they are really bad! They will suck all your money and you will start being different, your dsm friend or non-car friend will start leaving you and, well, unless you win the lottery, you're screwed!

Quit while it's still possible! I almost got caught, but I'm now in detox and almost rehabilated. lol

Repeat after me : DSM are bad, Volvo is the cure!

Ok now I need to stop trying to be funny and get to work if I want to make money for that new addiction!

Brian, I can't follow all the twist and turns of what everybody wants you to do and what you want to do, and you know I like the Gaylant because they were proven in WRC to be an effective car in both GpA and in GpN.

Again I'll stress: at the Amateur level, the car , the chassi and engine is no handicap. The gearbox ratios aren't as good as the modern cars and the brakes could be better, but who knows if even if you had a better $et of ratio$ and better brakes, would you do better?

The Gaylant is paid off. And you like it. And you're woried the salvage title will hurt resale. Well if you can consider selling it then do as Gene suggested.
Don't COUNT on the potential dough from the Gaylant.
Think of it as a potenial bonus.

As to what to build, hard to say. The 240 IS simple.
