Appreciate the input, guys.
I don't see any reason why I couldn't build my currently running 245 into a rally car. The thought of loading gear in the back and strapping tires to the roof is just novel enough to be cool. I'll have to check the rules to see how a cage might be installed in the rear area, if it's even needed back there. Any other special considerations, since this will be a family truckster rally car? :p Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |
There's a die cast model out there of a 145 (I think) done up in Safari gear with Shell gasoline livery. Pretty sweet. You could do it like that!
You'll need a bulkhead for the fuel cell. Since that's an 86, you have the 1031 rear axle, which is easy to do LSDs with. You should check the wiring harness and make sure it's not rotted. There are guides on Turbobricks on how to add a turbo to your existing N/A motor. You should check out these two yards -- don't know how close they are to you: Tucson, AZ http://www.revolvstore.com/ Scottsdale, AZ http://www.hirschinds.com/ Find an M45 in the interim until you build a good T5. You will probably also need to build another bulkhead around the rear beer cooler! ...Brian... |

Hell, you could carry your spares to the rally in the back of the wagon, then pile them outside and sleep in the car! Probably the only affordable way to rally these days...

Brian,
Listen to JVL & Heymagic on this one. Double duty (street & rally) does not work out. Your build/repair time on the rallycar prevents using it as a daily driver. If you must rally a Wagon buy a second one. But why? Keep your Volvo Wagon as a daily driver/chase car; and pick up another cheap Volvo Sedan to build your rallycar. Rich Smith |

And I did have to put some stuff in a few different peoples cars, but I had some extra tires that I didn't actually need. I could actually fit everything inside the rally car, and will for the next event. Grant Hughes |

Shame there's no Sierra wagons, eh.
There was a time in the late 80s that all the gang I hung out with all had wagons of the same model as we rallied Dave Clark and Sam Bryan both had Opel wagons, I had a Saab 95, Dave Dunn had a 510 wagon, a friend Satya had a Honda wagon etc. Sometimes we'd take all the wagons out and thrash them in the woods, Saab 95 ruled! I'm working on hearing what they have to say more these days. I would never plan on daily driving a rally car. For now, the plan is to get the Galant back on the road and sell the Talon. At that point, I will have cash in hand and can decide if I want to pick up a 244 and sell the wagon, or strip the wagon down and build it. The Galant will be my daily driver. Sure, a "DSM" might be a royal pain in the ass from time to time, but I'm so used to working on them, I pretty much need a couple sockets and a Swiss Champ and I can fix pretty much anything in the dark by feel. Don't have that peace of mind with the Volvo yet. (Not that it's given me ANY trouble thus far.) I know I paid too much for my 245 ($1000, to be exact), so I'd lose my arse selling it. While I'm bringing the Galant back from the dead (it runs great right now, just have to un-mangle headlight mounting points and some sheet metal), I will be mulling over the benefits of being Joe Cool with the rally wagon one day versus being faster with the lighter 244. We all know how much "fun" cars listed as needing "minor engine work" or that "ran when we parked it" can end up being. It's nice to have a 245 that runs like a champ right now rather than get rid of it and start ANOTHER rally project which requires me to rebuild an engine and transmission right out of the box. Appreciate the input, though! Good thread. Design the cage right and V and I might even be able to sleep in the 245 to save on hotel costs at events! Hey Brian
We meet at Roger Hull's place some time back..You and a nother DSM guy were getting some shocks and a motor mount from Roger's Isuzu.. You do know were tripping in Volvo's up here in Perscott ...Tree Hugger Inc has a College up here and the kids and all the retired people bring them in.. And us Red Necks realy have know uses for them ... And DSM's rock ...Just alot of people do not have the brains to make one run ...Roger proved that... If you say EVO3 they all love them ...Same car.. The RWD is the way to go...Let me know if you need anything... David Hazardous Toys inc |

------------------------------------------------------- > The RWD is the way to go...Let me know if you need > anything... Thanks, David! I think I remember you. Ray Peters and I had spent the morning tearing up the back road into town. His Talon had twice the horsepower and ten times the tires, so he was having a bit more fun than I. (Although hearing the tires scream bloody murder at just 15mph around some of those curves was enjoyable.) The one thing I really need right now is the front-most 8" of an 89-92 Galant so I can get this GVR4 back on the road. Once it's on the road, I will sell the 245 and begin looking for my cheap 242/244. I'll also clean the shit out of my Talon and sell it to cage the Volvo I get. It's 112* down here today. I have no AC. The Gaylant needs to return to the road. Soon. Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |
