Maybe some more info. This is for his daily driver 4x4 toyota truck. He just wants a bit more torque, so he can go up the freeway without downshifting ect. All the things he has done/bought so far are basically stock Toyota Turbo 22r parts, except the really nice T3 manifold he found. He is not looking for crap tons of torque, just a mild 10psi motor.

In my 86 4runner I blew up the stock 22Re. replaced it with a reman'd motor, a 250/260 cam from northwest off road, and i slapped a 2 in exhaust from front to back. Between the cam, exhaust and a freshened up motor it cut my downshifting by almost 70% (I might have had them shave the head a little. i don't remember)

It was by no means fast, but I was able to start bringing coffee with me because of less time on the gearshift.

He borrowed my Ford 2.3T Volvo wagon a few times, and could not believe he could accel from 60-80 in 5th, climbing a hill, at 1/2 throttle.

Yeah... He'll never get that kind of pull out of the truck for any reasonable budget. I always wanted to convert mine to propane. I think the got propane kits were $800 or so, that or a turbo diesel....

Any way back to pistons.

These guys are advertising turbo piston sets for $300~

Still is, made by Camden superchargers. I had this kit on my own truck.

Crap LC engineering has the 22ret piston and ring sets for 160 bux. Any reason you need to have forged pistons? Factory Rte pistons were cast . was this the 22RE or the 22R?

If he wants I've got an old haltech fuel only ecu, wiring harness, manual and softwere that would be perfect for a budget turbo build. I even have some flow matched 300cc injectors for the experience.

Got a Toy coming in Monday for big exhaust (3.0). I usually go 2.25 on the stock 4s and 2.5 on everything else. Everyone likes to go with a bigger, better looking tire and the poor engines just hate that. I know a few guys have spent the money to change the gearing.

Low boost turbo would be ok for what he is wanting and probably make it fun to drive again.

Well the tear-down guy at Foster's (the auto machine shop I've known for 28 years) his in-laws had one of these things 22RET and the T had to stand for Turd. After helping him set the ignition timing, THEN the cam timing correct and actually seeing if the turbine shaft was moving, ie not seized and made sure that at least everything was at a good "Stage Zero", I concluded it was just a massive pile of shit, and slower than fawk..

He was thrilled at the improvement

Then he drove my beater Xratty...

Like a number of other Japonaise junk, I think they purposely made them make no power, but mainly so they could put a badge on the back that reads "TURBO"

Sean, what does you guy want?
He want it to go as good as a stockish Xratty?

Is he really a cheap bastid? Does he want the thing to work for 3 months? 7 mo?
1 year?

Ed, are you just trying to be a "forum guy" and talk generalities and theoreticals?

I'm sure we're all overjoyed that your Starion pulls your friends Xratty..

What does that have to do with finding good pistons for Sean's poor friend?
It seems you just want to argue.

Sean has not given us enough info to really make any good advice.

fact is if the custmer wants a turbo yugo and has the money to pay for it
then the that is what the custmer gets

I don't know anybody who wouldn't think a turbo Yugo would be pretty sweet.

john you are right not enough information, but its fun to talk theory

my old starion is mark bowers car now

i found an xrtatty to be as quick as a non i/c starion

i still would like to build a sierra 4wd, or an xr8

all i'm saying is vintage racing is a very fun sport.

if i could find a good solid early to mid 80s celica i would race it with a 22r
