Halo cages are leagal in NASA.

True,,but not compliant at RA events. The halo hoop is the best part of that cage.

It looks like the halo is fia 253 1. should be a legal halo if RA excepts fia cage rules. I would still scrap the cage and start more in lines of what is normally seen in the rally community. If nothing else for resale value.

Good luck with the builder if they want further business im sure they will make right with you.

No way. Halo hasn't been FIA 253 for as long as I know. I even checked back to the 2007 version that I still have and it wasn't legal then.

Halo hoop is not FIA compliant and hasn't been ,if ever, for many years. Its mostly a US circle track thing nowadays.

I guess im looking at the wrong pics then. His car looks like the front a pillar comes up goes cross the wind screen and over to the other side of the car (halo). Then theres 2 seperate bars coming from the main hoop and hooking to this bar. This is the very first pic on fia web sight of cage pics. It is hard to tell with his pics ike Grant said it needs one looking up.

When I tried building my cage I read all the FIA, RA, and NASA rules, looked and studied photos of other cages in the same car. It was a lot of work and I still got it wrong. Thankfully I got help from some people on this site like Robert Gobright and JVL amongst others. Without them I would never have passed inspection. Point is, as a wise man (Robert) has told me more than once, you cant do this sport alone. Take advantage of AJ_Johnsons offer to go and check out his car, sit in it take notes, there is a lot more than just a cage that you will need, make note of them, the other stuff is also in the rulebooks, it all adds up to $$$$$. Try to set up a meet and great with other members in your area, pic there brains because they got great info and the rally stories will put a smile on your face.
If I were to do it again I would buy an already built used car. the price will probably be pretty close to what you will spend on building your car and less of a headache.
Also, I crashed 1min 30sec or so in on my first rally. Luckily we were able to finish the rally. smiling smiley

here are some pics of my car, which is a mk1 rabbit. its phil's old car. cage was built by phil's fab guy in PDX.

here is the view from the back and where the struts tie in. if there was a horizontal bar between the struts, you wouldn't be able to get the spare tire out.

detail of strut tower

notice how tight the main hoop is to the shell in these pics:

rear drivers side of main hoop

this is looking at the back of the drivers side door jam, notice how tight the cage is

there are a lot of different legal ways to do door bars, but if you copy this, you will be legal.
also notice the "a-pillar support bar" goes straight to the node on the bottom.

a-pillar--tight

top of a-pillar

top of a-pillar node

roof

bottom of a-pillar

here is the node at the top corner of the main hoop

here is the main hoop and how it ties into the floor. hard to see the plates, but they are there.

i dont think this cage would get log booked today because the upside-down triangle in the main hoop would have to be a spiderweb. not sure about that though.

I am not 100% but I think the X can be in the main hoop or the rear stays for FIA, so it would still be legal build. Nice car BTW. I liked it when Phil rallied it also.

I have the same door bar configuration, X with a sill bar.

Remember that all joints need to be welded 100%. When I inspect a cage I use a mirror and flash light. It is rare to find a cage that has 100% welds on the first try.

The main hoop must have an X now..optional in the backstays.

Wow. I'm pretty upset to say the least but oh well move on I guess. Just to be clear I printed off the NASA Rally Cage specs and gave it to the guy to follow. I even gave them some pictures to follow. I do blame somewhat of my self for not knowing all the terms and what not but for $2k I was hoping they would. Waiting for replys from the shop to see about the redo. Thanks for all the help guys.

What they want to know and what I'll be sending them.

Back stays must tie into rear
Rear of main b pillar hoop needs to stay straight and not bend inward
No halo
front legs need to go farther outward (towards firewall)
gussets
cage needs to be closer to the body

Hows that sound?

I think the problem is you should have given them the RA rules and NASA rules. It's very easy to build a cage that is legal for both.

It used to be that RA/CARS would accept NASA logbooks, but i'm not sure anymore with the new additions in the nasa rulebook to include the halo hoop etc.

RA accepts any logbook. A logbook is not proof of a cars legality, it is nothing more than the history of the car and an indication it passed someones initial inspection.

RA does require all cars entering to meet its safety rules...that is the rub with some of the unconventional NRS cage designs.
