Watch the east coast cars, the amount of rust collecting in the floor pans can easily stop a car at tech.

And that VW-----deal!

Oh, great googlymooglies. The only problem is the fuel tank has gunk in it? That's like a 30 minute fix!

Ok, so the stock 1.8 is kind of anemic, but dead solid reliable.

Half a mind to buy that and find somewhere to stash it as a midwest/east coast toy.

You can park it at my place, as long as I get to drive it for events you're not doing. winking smiley

You'd probably want to paint it some cheesy color, huh.

Well let me update you on whats going on. Bucks 4x4 out of Boise, ID won't fix the cage or reimburse. In Idaho all contracts are binding. Even vocal ones. So without getting into it I'm taking them to small claims court and will be using the first two pages of this forum post to help. I also have people here writing stuff up and a helpful sponsor checking it out. I appreciate all the help but chances are we are cutting the cage out and just starting over. I have dumped a ton into this already and can't afford to start on a new car. And by dump I mean find a mk2 for a decent price and strip it and re order suspension.
......
. This cage also took 4 months to build in a shop...
.

Sorry to hear that mate, I've only just seen this thread but they certainly made an arse of that cage. It's a good thing you know now before you've put heaps more work/money into that car. At least now you get build a proper cage.

Hey, since we're all in here... what's the consensus on how long it takes to have a cage built? Barring the shop having other major work, of course. But, a week? 10 days? Two weeks? It's been so long I don't exactly remember mine.

Thanks,
Anders

Depends on the shop. I usually tell people 3-4 weeks because we only work Tuesday night from 7-10 and Saturday from 10-4.
If you are dropping it off to a hobbyist or garage side worker with experience, 3-6 weeks is reasonable. If it is a shop that runs full time, they should not have you even bring them the car until they are ready to work on it and it should only take 3-7 work days tops.
Now I am assuming that being a rallyist you have already stripped the interior, removed the tar sheets, dashboard, seats, etc.
Add time for any special shit like the shop having to do that stripping, seat brackets, sunroof patching, etc. Sometimes getting material takes a bit longer. Ryan S dropped off his wagon on Saturday but I can't get steel until next week so if it was just cage work being done, I wouldn't even be able to start it until 10 days after he dropped it off.
An STI we did where we got paid to strip interior took us just one Tuesday evening. A E36 BMW took me one work day and then two of us one Tuesday to finish removing dash. Still have tar sheets to remove. Probably 3 times the amount of time to strip interior on a BMW than on a STI. The amount of electrical on the BMW is confounding...

Take a look at this map.

Was the place you're using listed here? https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=208157819221685814990.00046295d84800b7adaeb

If so, please pm me offline so I can remove them from the map.

10-14 solid days of after work hours for 2 guys, that are experianced. thats actual cage building.. not prepping, not waiting on material.

i think 40 man hours is a bit low of an estimate... ide put it near 100 man hours, so 50 hours for 2 guys..

I be sorry as a muthafucka I did, still sorry I did n' hustled ta peep what tha fuck I holla'd a lil' bit better, or at least try to.

Hello everyone!

Update: Carl Somerton, our local scrutineer came out to my house last night and inspected the cage. Needs two gussets at the X-Crossing in the rear with the seat belt bar and to remove the bent pieces by the A-pillar and replace with straight ones.. Thats it. So I will be fixing it, hopefully this weekend and boom cage done.

I"ll keep posting build pictures till it's done. Thanks for the tips and help.

What cage? The one in the photos on page 1?

Shirley, you cannot be serious---if that is the case.

Carl's a nice guy and has definitely been around racing a long time, but AFAIK he hasn't done any rally scrutineering outside of Idaho. If Gene and others on here are saying things need to change, there's a chance that it may be turned away at an event where Carl isn't the chief scrutineer.

So, new pictures? smileys with beer
