I think tires are the key, we ran the wrong used tires on Saturday (mostly due to our off on the first stage of the day). We ran a brand new proper compound tire on Sunday and it showed. However we are still limited due to variety of 14" tires. Sunday we had FAR from perfect driving. We were seeded very far down again, so passing cars was an issue, but for the most part other competitors knew that we were coming. But this is all with FAR from perfect driving. I think a good co-driver/driver combo with great driving in a decent 2wd car on proper tires would show stage times MUCH faster than what we ran on Sunday. I think 94-97% is possible. It's a good portion money, with lots of teamwork added in. -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA |

I have driven XR's and I think the inside is Ugly too.
As street cars they drove farily good, way ahead of their time. I even drove one on the wonderful gravel roads near Seahla, WA back in the day when the car was not so old, I am thinking 1991. Still I can not get excited about pouring $18,000 into an ugly mid 80's car 20 to 30 years after it left production. In the long run reality always wins. |

Derek, you know my sweet wife really is not into this car thing but she said "he's driving a boxy looking Golf, and he says the Xratty is ugly? But, the Ford was only 2WD and they had tech problems throughout most of that season. The point is, when they were doing good, a 2WD car was beating many top AWD cars.
Also don't forget that in 1986 when everyone was focused on Group B, VW was winning the Group A championship. Then in 1987 everyone else had to try to adapt and catch up. VW apparently announced intentions to build a new WRC car based on the new Scirroco earlier this month. Grant Hughes |

And more to the point is that of any car out there then, the only reliable one and affordable on that could be made to have more or less same power output and hence performance is the Xratty. That 2.3 may be all iron but it will make more than enough power, especially ft-lbs. And we have alternate gearboxes and can do different final drives at prices anybody can afford. Further, that one the roads most similar to North American roads, the 2wd Fords were within reach of overall placings against the all conquoring, best car acknowledged by all, Lancias. > > Also don't forget that in 1986 when everyone was > focused on Group B, VW was winning the Group A > championship. We'll see, they have always done so poorly in rally its not funny, and as long as its still Germans running the program, it'll probably continue to be poorly run. > > Grant Hughes > www.nocoastmotorsports.net > Denver, CO John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! "Take a good look at Burmeister's Mazdaspeed3 next time you get a chance"
Ditto. I second that emotion. I saw it at Maine, last year. Great looking car. Really impressive. Very sanitary. Looks professionally built. Nice job, guys! But, I would still go budget, unless maybe someone wants to give me an SRT-4. I took notice of that 2,200lb, 160hp Civic. Or I might still build another SE-R (just because I have 3 already). Which is another car thats not coming over here. Thats ok with me, though, that thing is 10x as ugly as an xratty. Now if we could get the polo here and put some s1600 bits on it, yum. |

This the right approach to picking a rallycar. We might not all agree on what is the right car but it needs to work. Like JV says, "Better is better." With the competition getting turned up a notch with MaxAttack! it's nice to see the old enthusiasm from the Group F days back. Rally is fun stuff.
