My 12 year old son Riley and I went and serviced for Derik. Our trip started off not so good as we left at 4:30 pm Friday, and spent 4 hours waiting for an overturned semi to be removed from Snolqualmie pass. With that, we arrived at the host hotel at 5:15 am, watched the sunrise, went to bed, and got up at 7. Derik drove that car very well, had only 1 small issue on Saturday and ended up 5 seconds back of O'driscoll. Sunday went well as he made up time on most of the stages to win the event. I have watched the incar, and it is just driving good lines, and using the brakes well.

The poor Merkur broke a ring or holed a piston. Iwas gutted for Dave, as his times were getting pretty damn good! The car will be here Wednesday John, I need to see if I have a good shortblock that I can freshen up, or if you have one you could have ready by Friday? Nothing fancy yet, just a fresh stocker.

I have a couple, and can drag one out...

The problem with the pickup truck was mostly a speed factor thing. They use both the CRS and RA rankings as base and then the stewards and organizers go over the generated list and shuffle people around based on what they can figure out from standings at other recent events. In this case Jeff used to be pretty quick but he hasnt run for several years so he was rusty and ran slower than expected.

Oh and it was nearly impossible to get close enough to tap them because of all the dust.

Big blunder.
John Reed has been a man on the move.. not many events but aorund overall 4th -5th up here against real cars in real woods, not SoCal stuff smashing into dry washes in fields of 17-18 cars of all kinds of whatever stuff.

Sorry but that's true...

This starting position thing is a pisser in that it's always some sort of bullshit and always seems somebody's good results are 'overlooked' for somebody who has been around but in dubious competition, much like the "nice lady' who looked down he nose at Lane and explained "Well when you done the PRO series for a while, maybe then you'll have some credibility"
And John reeled the bitch in that POS pickup in just a few miles....

In the years I was active, despite finishing always in the top 10, and by early 90s in to 5, I was ALWAYS seeded around 20th...always. It was OBVIOUS that there was no "seeded draw" but some bullshit shit going on...and eventually friends who were more "politically correct' confirmed it that it was done that was on purpose.

Not that it matters much at all, but what's with CRS having different Group2/5 displacement rules than the rest of the US?

I've been telling people that the cool thing about the 95 m3 engine is that it'll fit into G2 if run N/A and you could still strap a snail or blower to it and run G5...if you pick up a tire sponzor. Not that the car could make use of all that forced induction has to offer, only thinking of it in the 'its $1500 vs. $5k for a good euro motor' debate.

I know I know, one fu*$ing class 2WD...just curious. smiling smiley

Dave, the goofy rules are R/A's F-Cuplike ones. Two other sanctioning bodies and the CRS declined to follow along when the succumbed to the pressure from here and adopted those.

Wait...you're saying F-Cup is goofy idea that we shouldn't follow to breed good competition? Power to weight seems a pretty standard measure to even the playing field, though obviously cubic $ can buy better than average power for the displacement.

Does CRS use minimum weights vs. displacement for G2, or is it simply engine size and weight is whatever you can afford?

No, I'm simply saying that the base-displacement-multiplied-by-modifier system was in use by everybody and then R/A changed their rules. They are the odd ducks in that regard. There was no statement of either system's worth in my reply - that particular topic has been flogged elsewhere. smiling smiley

Ah, gotcha. Personally in the land where 99% of competition vehicles are running 4 valves per cylinder overhead cam engines, it seems odd that we've got to 'give back' to the pushrod types. Guess there are still a few oddballs running around with rotaries.

Yeah I was a little corn-fused at that too. One a sysytem that nobody but 17-20 people in the whole world use and maybe understand, the other a system that is widely acknowledged at the most successful and the most intense system in the world with hundreds of entrants at every event--at times with 60 in one class like F-cup B or F-cup Junior... 4 or 5 times the entire field as some CRS rallys..

I will grant that Rally America just could NOT leave well enough alone and fiddled around with min weights and as they almost invariably do, fucked things up some but it works....

The absurdity of allowing ANY spec 3.0 liter, just because the valve might be opened by push rods in the same class as a innocent boy starting in a 1.6 Corolla with nothing said about weights was patently obvious way back in 1993....many times I saw the faces of people drop and go slack jawed when i explained what COULD be done all in the same class...weenie-wilt is how I describe it..

But the same guy all flaccid would immediately get "excited" again when i said, but if he has a big ass 3.0 he must weigh minimum xxxx lbs, then the guy thinks he might have a chance...

CRS classes, well they've been explained to me a few times; I've read the rules but you all know I can't understand things basically illogical so i don't pay any attention. I'm not there, they do things their way, people claim to have lots of fun..
There doesn't need to be UNIFORMITY..
Indeed the drive towards uniformity is either a mental illness of just a
mal-developed brain.

And how well we know that when something is "left open" like that there will be somebody who exploits it.. I think Mercedes showed that pushrods are no hinderance when they bought the pushrod Indy motor and had a pair of valve covers cast in that said Mercedes on them..went pretty good.

I wonder seriously if, since the early 1990s if there are any body out there aside from Holmes and the Saab V4s that have entered with pushrod motors?
