Jeez you guys. It's obviously a prediction, as the tenses used would put the actions already in the past.

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

"It has therefore been decided that the Fogg family is turning over the rights to the Rally America series to USAC who has a long track record of overseeing some of the most prestigious and historic motorsports events in the US."

I think I just puked in my mouth...

The problem is, rally is not a sport that is spectator friendly and thus, not very revenue friendly to a for profit company trying to run a series.
I think the Fogg's are actually showing a little more sense this year. The website sucks ass, they're not producing or distributing much content effectively, but they're also not making grandiose claims about what they can deliver. I think they might surprise us...

Except... wouldn't any spectator revenue rightfully belong to the event, not the series? 'on event' marketing properties are heavily controlled by the event itself, not the series promoter. (depends, somewhat, on the agreements in place)

I assumed you were when you said rally wasn't spectator friendly. Mostly because the sport is very good to watch, and easy to build up drama, in most virtual spectating venues. (IE: Time delay broadcast or web. It does suck in a live format unless you have MASSIVE infrastructure and support behind it)
Rally is exciting to watch when produced well. It also costs a shit-ton more to produce than most other motorsports.

When there is a race to watch with entertaining and highly talented drivers. I can't recall last time I watched wrc.

Fogg senior was out working as a course Marshall at Ojibwe this year. Sounds like he had fun.

Had a great time at Gorman this weekend.

See other post for details.

Lots of fun. Great rally, fantastic organizers, runs on time, terrific after-rally party.

from someone that's done both:

NASA's been much more accessible to start rallying. Love that they are trying new formats (rally moto, utvs, etc), national championship format is a shoot-out type formula etc. which seem to give folks the ability to get into the dirt and go sideways at a lower price point. targetted towards the grassroots racer.

RA: lots of media hoopla. seems to attract teams with much deeper pockets. subaru contingency seems to help regional entries if you're one of those teams that swing that way winking smiley.

Haven't been around long enough to see what comprised of previous era "club type formula", but i think from a big picture perspective, U.S. rallying is in a bit of a limbo.

[rant]
  • grassroots teams still doing it until they run out of money.
  • guys and girls with talent can't progress to world level because no funding, and the powers that be have chosen to import that talent instead of incubating it here.
  • for teams with deep pockets, money has gone the way of Global Cross Championship. *on second thought, may not actually be bad thing except now there is even less money to develop people involved in actual rally racing.
  • Limited manufacturer support or nationwide interest (related) leading to zero technological contributions into the sport
  • high barriers to entry to the sport with no real mentoring/laddering program; everyone's still out there learning on their own, trying to reinvent the wheel, keeping the talent/development level at the status quo.
  • WRC like logistics/towing to campaign a full championship for decidedly non-WRC like funding means grassroots racers stay grassroots racers because all their money is spent getting from event to event instead of training/development programs which is arguably where it should be spent to make better drivers.
[/end rant]
