C'mon ya haggis munchin son of a smitty. Details!
Did the entry fee go up compared to previous years? Are the entry fees being raised due to the new spectator regulations that came from that MSA/government investigation in the last year or so? Here are those recommendations for any interested: https://www.msauk.org/assets/mesrrecs16sep-1.pdf “Maybe rallying can never be completely safe for the competitor but for spectators there are some simple personal safeguards which you can follow so that you are not putting yourself at risk. I ask you, for your own sakes, please think where you watch from, do not take risks to get the best view or the best photo. Listen to the marshals and never argue with them. Follow paths that have been made for you and don’t please wander about in the stage and try and get out of the way just as a car is coming. I know you love our sport, and our sport would be nothing without you, but do not put yourself and our sport at risk. Use that British common sense!” Ari Vatanen, 1981 World Rally Champion Grant Hughes |

Seriously though... It is human nature to assume that what happened last year will happen this year, and what happened this year will happen next year.
That's not true in rally, or really, much of anywhere else. If there's a rally you want to do... do it now. There is no rally in the US that's guaranteed to happen next year. Most people don't keep track, but here in the US we cancel, oh, 3 to 6 rallies a year too. these tend to be smaller rallies... but not always. And if you look at the rallies from 40 years ago... they're pretty much all gone or unrecognizable. So all "the biggest rallies of the year" ended up, at some point... not happening. The solution hasn't really changed in all that time, I believe: 1) Volunteer. For most of you racers, volunteer a LOT more than you have, cause most of you don't volunteer at all. 2) Race when you can, and help other teams to get started. And don't upgrade to expensive fancy cars or tow vehicles. The vast majority of the people who have been in this sport a long time don't use either. Anders Grassroots rally. It's what I think about. |

Just when I thought Subaru couldn't screw up U.S. rally more than they have in the past 15 years. That is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen. That means it will gain traction in U.S. rally. Given the smart choices or the stupid choices since 1998 the stupid choices keep being used. And so it goes........ |

Can someone explain what the purpose of the 360 videos is? They just did another one for LSPR. When I watch them they just make me sick. I'm guessing there is some fancy TV or goggles that you wear that makes this better?
Spending less money to build rally cars and more on fancy TV's and cameras will save rally! Dave Grenwis - DG Rally - www.dgrally.com |

If you watch them on your phone, the gimmick is it uses the gyro/accel and you can swivel around the phone to "look around". If you zoom in closely - on one of the shots - you can actually see all the other teams leaving for Canada. ![]() |

Be careful what you throw stones at. The person behind the 360 video is a grassroots rally competitor, the project was created in his basement. So money spent by Subaru on the 360 stuff leads to more entries in other events in the country. The technology is interesting and gives an interface to sport that has not existed before and is more consumable than a trip to the woods. This type of innovation should be encouraged.
If Anders had created this in his secret lair would the response be different? While Subaru may be out spending everyone in the US that is not the fault of the 360 tech. |

I can honestly say NO. I thought his Nook concept was never going to survive a rainy / dusty weekend in the woods, and don't get me started on rally solo. ![]() ![]() This is actually perfect fodder for this thread - Will 360 degree video "save" or even help rally? I see 250K views on it - and that's actually surprising. The Global RX one they did 7 months ago netted only 177K so far. Views don't tell how this is transferring into supporters, sponsors, and fans. The tech is the tech - and good for him for coming up with it and selling it to Suabru - but I don't think it's going to save rally. I also say this after standing at a start holding a Nook in a bag - counting down competitors in a full on downpour. Will I be setting up 360 cams along the route - who knows?! |
