Oh, I didn't realize you never got around the 5 lug conversion. Although, it probably makes sense to upgrade to 5 lug...then run VR front end stuff, and maybe snap fewer CVs? Although, like everybody else, I've got stacks and stacks of 4x100 wheels. |

Yeah and 100 ways to crack the sheetmetal...Saab guys only in North America---well the silly boys who try to use the heavy, expensive 99 and 900s always go on about hockey pucks---while the guys getting paid to pound 99/900s used a mount using like 3 Volvo trans mounts--rubber... I used to ask "IF ......then...... to those guys IF the works cars went to all this trouble to weld up some morphodite mount with 3 wide spaced rubber mounts, then don't yu think its worth pondering why? "Naw a buddy said he read this is all I need.".... How many have i seen with spidery cracks growing out of the mount holes...a failure just waiting to happen.. a DNF in the making.. Trying to make my dinner and keep up with this thread is tricky!
Ok, the question asked of the stub ODs. Polo stub has a 28mm OD, mk4 Golf has a 30mm OD. (NB The polo stub on the left is from a drum braked model so does not have the integral caliper carrier mounting lugs. Other than that it is the same dimensionally as the disc braked stub with the carrier lugs. The mk4 stub on the right is a disc braked version and as mentioned previously has the lugs for the carrier on the axle and different offset carrier to compensate. Wheel bearings are sealed and permanently in the hub. Basically like a small version of a conventional FWD type wheel bearing. But it's rare for them to ever fail on the road even with 100k mileage on them. Offset wise from the point they bolt to the axle the Mk2 and 3 Golf, Polo and the Golf mk4 setups are the same. The stub mount bolt patterns differences are not ideal as they are not really more than an M10 bolt with apart. So for the work trying to convert the Golf mk4 setup to fit the mk1, 2 or 3 beam, then convert to 4 x 100 wheel PCD it is probably borderline on just getting a bolt on 4 x 100 setup. I think it would be close to the beam bending or the 4 x M10s would shear before this later type stub axle got bent. Disappointingly not yet a Jackass |

Stubbie than would be more expensive than plugging 4 miserable little holes and drilling 4 new ones..like making a flat drill fixture with 4 widdle steel inserts to keep the thing square... A hub with replaceable bearings seems like it would be worth thinking about in my view, but wot da fawk do I's noez? If you could purchase all the parts for $400 it would almost surely beat making the mk4 5-bolt stuff work.

Right, thinking outside the box here. VW parts are expensive so what other vehicles may have something useable in 4 x 100.
We got various GM / Vauxhall sheit over here. A quick search and found this. They are only £50 in this advert for the complete bolt on unit. And I saw them for half that price on ebay. There are ones without the ABS sensor making them cheaper. http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk/acatalog/VAUXHALL_REAR_HUB___BEARING_-_without_ABS_-_9120129N.html Did you get anything like this over there guys? Definitely a hub w/ replaceable bearing is the way to go. Unfortunately, we haven't found one yet (except for the MK2/3 style bearings. But you'd think with all the crappy fwd cars around, there should be one with a decent rear bearing setup that could be modified to work fairly easily. |

I think the only one there we got was the Cavalier.
