Well pry off the offending gearbox part and get the good bellhoousing in hand..Splain to the mook selling that that nobody needs the bellhoising cause they already have one so its useless. OK problem 1 solved.. Did you get the cad-file for the block bolt layout yet? John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Well, no pictures from that guy ever came, and it's getting too late to try to arrange for someone to pick it up and bring it to Idaho, so I'm going to pass on that one and wait to see if one pops up for cheap here in NorCal, or maybe LA for the next time I go down there.
In other news, I went to the junkyard today and measured some stuff. In the front, it looks like the whole control arm/compression strut/swaybar from a Volvo 960 will just swap right in. The control arm's the right length and it looks like the bushing width is the same. I'm not sure if all the angles are the same, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be. That would be convenient as I'm sort of concerned about finding replacements should I bend the original RX3 ones. In the rear, I was hoping to be able to use a later Volvo 240 rear axles that already has the 5-link and just use its upper trailing arm mounts, but that's not going to work. The upper arm mounts on those axles are about 3/4" farther outboard and are angled so that the trailing arm points outboard. In the RX3, that'd make the trailing arm bang into the frame rail. So I'll just stick with what I have. Still not quite sure what to do about the rear suspension. I may end up cutting out both strut towers and replacing them with a single one over the rear axle that's wide enough to do a coilover. The problem with that is that it may mean that I can't run the stock gas tank (or would have to relocated forward about 5". On the other hand I found that a stock Volvo shock has 6.5" of travel, which translates to about 7.5" at the hub. That might be sufficient, and the problem that it currently has with the rear springs coming free could maybe be solved by putting in some long cones in the upper mounts. That'd be a whole lot easier, but obviously not a coilover setup. Group A Escorts apparently relocate the strut to the top of the axle and run coilovers. However, considering how hard it is to find parts for this car, I'm not sure I'd ever drive it as hard as I would an Escort, so maybe the current setup is fine. I waffle. In the past three weeks I've had the well pump and holding tank crap out, the dog had surgery, I got Lyme disease, the minivan needed tires, the Subaru's alternator croaked, and the oil guy showed up today unannounced and dropped 197 gallons in the tank. My liquid assets are kind of like my faucets two weeks ago.
If Mr. Canoe wants the gearbox, I can certainly help with the acquisition, just need some cash fronted my way. Andrew Steere Lyndeborough, NH KB1PJY |

I'm sure he'll cover it, just go pick it up and PM him when its shipped..You have the address I'm sure. (been doing a renovation on the house since the first, acres of linoleum scraped off, some gross panelling gone, 1400 holes patched from savage tenants driving a forest of nails, another 1.2 tons of abandoned shit loaded and off to the dump...200 ceramic tiles bought and ready, new bathroom crap found and loaded, bought a "normal for the rest of the world" on-demand water heater, gotta crawl under and attck the undersized steel pipes---which I had a drain rot thru 3 months ago...eeeewwwwy.. Glad I have nothing better to do than work this shit THEN (like right now) head out to machine shop...) Um, well shipping that from NH to here would be a b#@% and all I really need is the bellhousing. Would anyone here be interested in going in on it on a "You get the guts, I get the bellhousing" basis? Pete?
In other news, I've been going over the rear geometry, and I think I've settled on a plan. JVL gave me the idea of looking at Escorts and I've been doing a bunch of measuring and so on. By replacing the original rear strut towers, extending them about 3.5", and leaving the side nearest the wheel open, I can fit a coilover with a 2.5" spring. In fact, the 10" Bilstein 6100 coilover will work (these guys: http://www.ajusa.com/Bilstein-F4-B46-1103-H1-Monotube-Shock-Absorber-a18e6.html) along with a 14" Eibach spring (these: http://www.eshocks.com/hyp_ind.asp?SubCheck=5+IDQ2%2E&Free_Length=4Q1&SubChar=Q) - most likely a 175-rate spring to start. The lower end would be mounted at about 45" behind the rear axle, and my calculations show it needs a 6deg cant forward and an 10deg cant inward. I think the stock 6100's might be valved a little too high (Bilstein's 300/100 rebound/compression rate, which translates to 3000 newtons/1000 newtons at a high axle velocity), but it's a place to start. The fronts I haven't gotten to yet, but probably I'll just end up telling JVL what the bump/droop lengths should be and have him whip up some Sooper Bitchens with tophats. Hopefully not baby-puke green though. Self-righteous douche canoe Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 06/26/2014 11:17PM by hoche. |

On the right path.. Order thru me and you'll get the 255/100....I'd suggest starting with 16" 150s...Memeber I have the weld on mounts and I deliver them with 15mm bearings and the Soooper Bitchin' Stainless steel spacers that look like these: but both sides the short length. The sooper bitchin thing about those is the chamfer and that means when you're shoving it in between two flats, if the bearing has pivoted---and they always do---the spacers "self align" and you just slide the bolt thru---12mm bolt top and bottom...The normal junk is just dumb squared off spacers and they catch the edge of the mounting ears and gouge and fall off and generally suck... So get the shocks from me.. THEN you can barrow a shock from any Xratty or Volvo guy cause its the same thing....and any of the Corolla guys---if they ever come back... The 255/100 thing has a real nice damping curve--good blow off for potholes and rocks and that sorta thing... Update:
JVL is going to send me a shock with his chamfered spacers. The current plan is to weld mounts for that directly onto the axle, about 20 degrees or so behind top-dead center, and then figure out the turret height that is needed to make that work out. An alternate method would be to follow Tim Taylor's design of mounting the shock onto the end of the trailing arm but that means that I'd have to modify both the axle AND the trailing arm, and I'd rather just have to modify one. Also, mounting to the axle keeps the shock more upright based on where I can put the turret, and I can put the turret more outboard where the shock will have more leverage. (As mentioned earlier, GrpA Mk2 Escorts mount them directly on top of the axle). I found that the passenger side lower rear trailing arm mount is bent inward and upward about 30 degrees. From the way it's crushed I'm going to have to replace it. Whee. Whose idea was it to refurbish this car? Self-righteous douche canoe |
