CAT's are generally not required for NRS, and are the type of item that would not be checked (by me at least) to some others rules set. There is fairly good commonality in classes, so mmany if not ost class designations easily transfer from RA to NRS; there are few more special classes in NRS that do not translate directly. Also, say the following is explicitly in the NRS rules about exhaust and other items in NRS tech: "Each vehicle must have the following equipment in full functional condition: 1. Headlights with high and low beams; 2. Parking lights, taillights, brake lights, front and rear turn signals; 3. Horn, windshield wipers, windshield washer; 4. Inside rearview mirror and side mirror(s); 5. Foot brake and parking brake; 6. Tires of at least 2/32 minimums tread depth; 7. Mud flaps on all driven wheels and rear wheels; 8. Exhaust system, leak free and exiting at the rear of the vehicle; and 9. Engine sound suppression system which does not exceed 86db at any time, when measured 50 feet from the vehicle." This would tell me to not look for CAT's on RA or CARS logbooked cars unless the car was entered in a NRS class that required one. Regards, Mark B. |

Redid the skidplate front mounts in the hopes that it won't come loose and catapault the car, found that most of the rattling clunking noises in back were from the exhaust pipe banging around a bit, redid the timing curves, and made it idle like a kitten, and, who knows, maybe it'll even pass smogtest; we'll find out next week. The new airtemp sender and the Jacobs C4 coil solved a lotta problems.

1) Reassymbled my Quiaffe (with my JVL 4.46 ring gear )
2) Spent 3 hours getting the diff bearing preloads right. Pulled the races out and re-shimmed a gazillion times (ok, more like 5 or 6)..I need to get better at guessing the right shim thickness.. 3) Took apart input shaft to check for the infamous cracks which can show up on the VW 020 3-4 gear sync hub. No cracks for me! -e Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/18/2008 07:38PM by Eddie Fiorelli. |

I don't want to scare you but a year ago I had a 4.25 put in by someone I met on the Vortex (I know, but hindsight is 20/20 and my foresight is like 5/20). 1.5 rallies later and I find teeth in my tranny fluid..the knucklehead didn't torque the nuts that hold the ring to the diff down properly and one nut got loose ...Thankfully, I've got the resources to work on my own trannies now...

And i added the tranny fluid and diff addivite that JVL from JVAB imports recommended.
How s that for a plug! Thanks John Like i said ill take it out for a spin tomorrow. Hopefully all goes well. I was contemplating on doing the install myself but time restraints and my lack of experience on the internals made me decide to have it done by proffessionals. Since last installment.....
Seats are in. I've been cleaning inside the car. 'Tis amazing just how much glass was in how many different places!! Intake plumbing is rearranged such that filtered air should get to the turbo more easily. Dave Clark did a very pretty job of applying mud on the driver's side of the car. It is now ready for paint. Injectors got pulled and cleaned yesterday. I have two sheets of UHMW soes that those things that go away due to abrasion will not go away as quickly. JVAB has supplied a different compressor side for the T-4. I'll give it a whirl. The Volvo is shaping up!! JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

Finnished prepping car for DooWops and took it down to the scales and found we are a fat little car at 2900lbs. O'well I guess that means I just have to keep my foot in it. Yesterday I took the car out for a little shake down and put a rock up though the lower case. Poor car bled like a stuck pig. Towed it back to the shop and put her back on the stands ready to start fixing. And I thought I was ahead of the game.

Continued rebuilding my tranny. Got the case bearings pressed in, preload checks out, a little on the high side but within spec. Then we found the 3rd gear on the pinion shaft axial play exceeded spec so we stopped there. Seems like VW offers a slew of circlips with different thicknesses for this precise issue...tomorrow I call the dealer just for circlips
Almost done with this damn tranny ... -e |

Yesterday the intake plumbing got rearranged again for hopefully better efficiency...
The car went for a day trip to Mt Baker for some play time in the snow with snow tires in front and rallytires in the rear. Some good times were had. I've got the old laptop working again. After several years, it decided to play nice. It must want the car to run well at Doo-Wops. I sure do. Now I'll do some datalogging and figure out where to change the maps so that I need not always run racegas. Learned something about it yesterday. The required 'race-seats' hurt like hell when you sit in one for over an hour at a time. Grrrrrr..... Lord knows that we can't just have the comfortable seats I've always had in there. No pain no gain huh? Tomorrow morning I will mount up a bunch of rallytires. Jason was good enough to arrange it with a tire dealer with a reasonable attitude about rallytires. Most of these guys look at any imperfection in the bead area and will not touch the tire. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |
