Actually, you can tell a twin-scorll on a Subaru very easily because the exhaust note completely chagnes. With a conventional turbo, Subarus sound like Nissans running on 3 cylinders. With a twin-scroll turbo, they sound like Mitsubishis.

Seriously, the standard exhaust manifolds pair adjacent-firing cylinders, so two exhaust pulses come out right after each other and form one big pressure wave. The result is that distinctive, love-it-or-hate-it, not-quite-a-2-cylinder sound that almost all Subarus have.

A twin-scroll turbo works by separating adjacent exhaust pulses so the exhaust pulse from the first cylinder doesn't interfere with the scavenging of the second cylinder. To make this work, you HAVE to rearrange the exhaust manifolds so adjacent-firing cylinders go into separate halves of the twin-scroll turbine housing. The result is a hugely complicated header and a Subaru that sounds eerily normal.

Damn Dave you're so right! I did some searching... watched a few videos with subarus with twin scrolls and it takes away almost all that VW Hippy Bus sound that I thought all subarus had to have.

The twin scroll definately makes them sound much more like traditional Japanese turbo cars.

Nissans running on 3 cylinders, my ass.

They sound like badly-tuned VW busses.

Dave, you coming up to North Nevada next month? Is the 510 still alive?

Dave,
Interesting stuff about how the twin scroll turbo and header works on a sub-a-rat. Thanks for sharing.

Two years ago I had a chance to work a flying finish at STPR (after I pooched my piggybank) and therefore got to listen to a lot of cars run in anger. The SRT-USA cars sounded very different to all the other subies. They sounded really good and more conventional. Definitely less of the angry VW bus sound. Maybe this is why.

I hope all this sub-a-rat talk doesn't anger the RWD Volford Ogres, too much. ;-)

I know I'm in the minority, but I like how Subarus sound. Kinda like the best parts of a Ducati and a Harley mixed in with a little turbo whine. Its boring when all cars sound the same...

Should I be coming to North Nevada next month? Since i'm still building the "real" rally car, I haven't been looking at any rally schedules, so I don't even know what you're talking about. What am I missing?

The 510 is running and probably has one more rally in it before it explodes into a million pieces... No spares, though...

Pete Soper and I are putting on this event. It's June 21, and based in Reno, although the stages are over near Empire. It's a one-day event. For administrative
reasons we're running as a C2, with the first six stages counting for points. We're going to have an extra two "fun-run" stages at the end though.

Nah Dave, I don't think they (Pastrana, Block and Ringer) even know this forum exists. But hey, it's all good, no worries. I'll be around, participating in discussions and "ribbing back" when I have the time.
Say hi to JVL for me, looking forward to meet the guy one day..

Here's certainly an amazing driver, but the very few time I saw the car it wasn't running right.
