maybe introduce some sort of "teams that bring a volunteer body X reward?"

Apparently they tried a volunteer championship out in your area a couple years ago in connection with the WSRC. From what I heard, it was a lot of work and did not accomplish the desired effect, and so they stopped. Like most ideas, this doesn't mean the idea can't work, it only means that in that geographic area, in that era, with that event density, it didn't work.

I was thinking of the other way: giving racers points toward their racing championship for volunteering. There are already some examples, past and current, of this, most commonly seen in "organizer points". It's mostly seen in TSD rallies series as there is a much higher percentage of TSD organizers that still actively compete.

Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

I had this big, long post in response to Anders, but I decided to sum it up really short like:

It won't work. 95% of drivers have one interest, that is driving. I've asked many drivers who aren't competing at an event to come help out, the answer is always the same. Co-drivers are slightly better.

Volunteer buy-in is required for the sport. RallyWest is working on a system this year to do that. We'll see how it goes...

It's hard taking off work traveling 6+ hours to drive in 4'ish rally's a year. For me its not necessarily about the money, its the time/effort/logistics of getting there. If i can get there obviously I'd rather drive. If the car was out of commission for a year or something I would most likely volunteer at few of the local events.

All I see is dwindling entries, lost events, and increased video game sales. I suppose the American way now is spectating, video games, and RC cars... Why do when you can pretend?
I don't know what 2012 will hold for rallying, but my prediction is that the interest in real rally will continue to dwindle throughout the nation.
I am going to actively try to reverse this trend regionally by getting at least four new cars built and two to three rallysprints underway. May even aim for the end of the year for the first event. Also going to make No Coast Motorsports more official with some real services, a real bank account, and some new directions. I will also get at least six 13-17 year olds into rally cars for a day of fun and instruction at CORE. Probably will target local motocross and go kart events event winners. We will target and search for youth that have the means, talent, and potential to do well in rally cars and try to grow from there.
Fuck globally, think locally. Fuck GRC, let's bring back the CRC!

CHCA meeting on Tuesday. Give me a ring sometime tomorrow to chat - I'm happy to bring some ideas that way if having a 'flatish' hillclimb in the mix this year would help. I know we've got some new guys in the area who are itching to get started.

I can only address this part, but 70 entries at sno-drift is dwindling? I mean, it is possible it is an outlier until we have more data, but that's an awfully strong start to the season!

It's more difficult in the west is my guess. Too much distance between rallys. If i lived in denver I would have never built a car. How many events are within a 10 hour tow? Pikes peak but that really doesnt even count.

In the east with a 10 hour tow, i'm within sno-drift, stpr, nefr, black river, sandblast, rallywv, tall pines, probably a few more.

It's the chicken or the egg thing. Not enough events close enough to get people excited, no reason to create events without people.

yea i argee with out west distance factor. I live in Boise so the Idaho Rally is in my backyard. But the next closest rally is about 5 and a 1/2 hours (n. nevada) then after that, its about 8-9 (mt hood, OTR) then after that, its ridiculous.

....not to mention being an organizer squeezing the dry sponge of volunteers. I really don't think teams has a full grasp how hard it is to staff a rally completely.

It's more difficult in the west is my guess.

PNW seems to do ok.

Basically, what I am getting out of this is that this big, gaping hole of insufficient population density called the west in the US is causing people to say rally is dieing?

Come on guys. Saskatchewan and Manitoba also have zip for rallying, and it's not like it's dieing here. I think the point of this thinking game is that for anything to thrive, you need some sort of base population.

Bad places for rallying, if I had to hazard a guess with no research whatsoever.

I have to store it somewhere, I try to dish it out as quick and as often as possible but it sometimes piles up. Just like porn on the internet...
