Don't let facts get in the way of a funny post. Grant said Legacy and Under $1000:

You know what else is free. Dog shit. Doesn't make it any better...

I'd pay up to $1000 to avoid the amount of potential nightmares from that Legacy and just make it into a daily driver. That's the real nice thing about free cars. Not to build into a rally car that's driven a few times a year. To have as a daily driver that costs you nothing to buy, $30 a month to insure, and is dirt cheap to maintain. We just last night swapped a new 2.2 into a friends car who blew the head gasket. Total amount spent is around $60, though I'm going to replace an exhaust gasket that's leaking so we might hit $70.

Impreza's for $1k or under you need to be on and ready to go pick up as soon as they are listed. They disappear fast.

BMW

Volvo

I would say that based upon the availability the smartest cars to buy for a rally car build are the BMW or the Legacy. Volvo is not bad looking, but BMW wins in the power category.

i'll have about a $500 in this car to get on the road
but for that money it will have some new parts that dont come on a used car
timing belt, water pump, ect

this is the east coast so a little rust repair is the norm
the amount of rust my car is about what a $1k subaru will have

one day i will return to west (it won't be soon enough)

Is there some particular reason, I'm curious.
Is it the now rarity of the shells?
Or are you attracted to the complete lack of and steering, brake, transmission upgrades? Maybe the difficulty in trying make compression in 22R or NAPS-Z is the intriging challenge? Or getting a camshaft with any lift /duration and not killing the rockers is the crusade?

You know real well what I think is easiest, but I'm always curious about the thought process in 'why dis car is baller-er enough" to want to spend money on cage...and everything.

Here lie down on this couch and start from the beginning: Why do you hate your mother?

Naw the Nissan stuff had a shit steering box on road cars and retained the steering box on the 240 RS in fact it's in the history books as the last car to score WRC points with a steering box. Puke.

And out of the box the US spec motors were mostly Poooo-pooo.
No FJ20s for us (sniffle)

Oh yeah the Celicas, too bad different engine, a trannie the size of I don't know what but fawk me at least twice the size of any car tranny I have ever seen (I did Olympus 1986, last GpB round and there were a stack of Celicas for Waldegard, Mehta, Steve Millen, somebody else.... got to see a lot before and during---gawd damn they went like hell,) quick steering, real brakes etc

Any could be loadsa fun. SR20DET in the Nissan--yeee haw!
Some modern thing in the Sillycar----yeeeehaw.

Some its easier (cough, Volvo Xratty cough) and that means cheaper.
(And the longer ones with nice quick rack is just flat better)( does that mean you'll win? I dunno, that's up to youse!)

some of the 240rs cars had rack steering
i was thinking a 3sgte in the celica and what ever nissan has for the 240rs

its about having a good time, there is not enough money in rallying in this country to get to serious

i do like a sappire and xr4s, in south africa ford made a an xr8, 5.0 in an xrat.
add an awd set up with the cossie body work

i rallyed an 1985 celica gts, it was great fun for cheap back then, my starion esi-r was too not as cheap though.

but this thread is about subarus in rally light .

i would rather drive a slow car fast as a fast car slow!

Stripped mine today.
Cage, seats, steal some skid plates from Mark's car, and head up to Canada in December.
Have one to three additional people wanting them.

We've been working on the Open Light car again. The retainer on the clutch throwout arm came loose and the arm cracked the case. Brianne is transplanting the guts into another case. After that she has to track down a charging issue that might be related to a broken ground. She also installed the heavy-duty camber plates from Vorshlag to replace the rubber OEM and Type-N tops that only last one or two events.

The loose plates supplied by Vorshlag along with new wheel studs and nuts.

Installed plates.

The current shop inhabitants, the Open Light car, the Hillclimb car, the cherry STi and another future rally project.

Brianne and her friends have been working on the property getting it ready for Rallycross. I think they'll be holding events soon and there's even talk about a car control school.
