There has been some chatter about test days in, or around, Merritt. ~4 and a bit hours one-way for Jay. We've regularly had people drive that far, or further, for test days in Calgary. (That's about the same as Deadmonton to the Loop, but with a border crossing thrown in for fun)

I never really thought (never really occurred to think about) Merritt was that close to all the PNW guys, thats awesome. Sure, it would possibly take a whole weekend, but it would definitely be valuable seat time for people, and it would be a pretty relaxed two days overall.

I'm just saying PNW peoples, if you expressed enough interest (maybe send some emails to the RPM board), you might get a test day near you if they could get someone to organize it. I am the biggest believer in test days, even if its only one at the start of the season before your first race. Help shake the cobwebs out, try new techniques, play with car setup. I don't think I've ever had less than 10 passes on our test day loop, usually I end up stopping because I don't want to use up the car anymore than I have to smiling smiley

I used to help write and check out the Olympus route books in the old days. I used the old 510 rally car for that purpose and never had an issue. It wasn't as hi tech as some of the newer built stuff is.

Teams need to be able to use the resources available and affordable. Ideal sometimes has to take a back seat...which leads to another issue...no one should recce from the back seat of a car IMO.

Couldn't agree more.

But, will multiple teams in a car for recce be allowed at Olympus?

I think I've gone as far as saying it is allowed , but not recommended, at events I've organized.

I think it will be mentioned as you do..allowed but not recommended. There is a limit to the amount of baby sitting we can do.

Back seat recce sucks and has been nearly pointless when I did it.

Ouch, who'd wanna sit in the backseat of a Rallycar?smiling smiley

I'd like a rental but it's just another can o worms logistically

I think I'll Recce in my Rallycar with the belief that it's simple and exactly what any noob would want as far as line of sight and relating that to going full speed at Raceday.

I'd recommend recce in the rally car whenever you are allowed to... which is less and less these days.

We've recce'd around 40 events over the last 7-8 years, we've used the F350, Ferd's Bmw, Ferd's wife's Outback, rental cars, and the rally car. We both prefer that rally car hands down.

My rally car is not some highly strung, cam happy, race gas guzzler... so that helps. We use practice head sets... so that helps. Proper rally tires help. Skid plates help... None of the other vehicles had a skid plate... Ferd's Bmw got a new oil pan, after being trailered back to Ottawa from Tall Pines one year... pain in the ass, never used it for recce again!

Sparco PRO2000 seats are pretty comfortable. Full harnesses keep you from being pitched around in the car while going slow over bumps... this happens in all the other options. Yeah a rally car will be a bit bumpier than the rental limo, but you don't have to worry about stuffing a rock through the oil pan.

I'd prefer to break the rally car on recce that any of the other options... we expect to break shit on the rally car, which is why we carry around all those spare parts, so we can fix it right there at the rally! Street cars, service trucks, rentals... not so much.

As a driver I find that sitting 3feet higher in the F350 that one of the worst things is the different sight lines and the crests that you don't see... I'm always wondering if Ferd is lost in the notes when all I can see is a crest coming and there's no mention of one.

Anyway, each to their own. My advice is based on my experience and is worth exactly what you paid for it... no refunds will be given!

-Martin.

Or maybe a stage that's running again this year and find some wicked fun in-car and post that! Make us hungry! The thought of taking the Chumpcar out for Olympus and Idaho is nagging on me. Anybody need a bad ass service crew person? Buy my flight to Seattle! I drive trucks really good. Well, well.

Two times at nite would be cool.... But, I think it might be a cut n paste error. If u look at the times for the Sunday run it ends mid afternoon in the left hand column, for first out.

Fun times either waycool smiley
