It was heart breaking when Adam told me that. Black top in the mail or ??? Did you hole the block or just lose a bearing?

Not sure yet. Going to start pulling the motor tonight, should give me a better idea. It was doing something weird after the first stage, and in the middle of the 5th stage the oil pressure just dived and the motor said no more. Garth tells me there was a visible slick of oil on the road, so I am assuming I am going to find a hole. I ordered a silvertop, that's what the current one is built from, though with better internals, so the wiring will be plug and play. I've got a few hours of wiring to do thanks to a small oil fire. It will be down a bit on power from the current motor, but it will get me through until the Drop Bear is ready to gospinning smiley sticking its tongue out Should make my battle with Garth more difficult and entertaining.

What's a Drop Bear?

It's an 8 foot Koala Bear that drops from trees in Australia and eats tourists.

Well that's what happens when they're revved mercilessly..

And speaking of mercy:
Popped another headgasket I hear...

Don't argue: deck the block...or get used to popping headgaskets..

You can surface the head all you want but the block surface needs a clean up...They all do at this point..

Funny enough, it wasn't the high revs that did it in, not that they helped, definitely made the damage faster and more violent, but there was a manifold piece that broke somewhere on the first stage that we somehow couldn't find in service. It is behind the throttle bodies, so the car started running a lot leaner then it is tuned to do. Didn't take long after that to make the race bearings give up, then the high revs did their thing.

I think Dave actually put a hole in one of the pistons, it was a pretty nasty sight.

That was the most fun I've had at a rally in a long time.

Ditto. Had a blast, everything ran smoothly, and a little bit of carnage but no injuries makes for a great weekend. Me and my medic got a good startle from one of the Volvos while we were posted at inst 53 on the night running of Nahwatzel - I think they weren't quite sure if they wanted to bear left or blow banner tape and take the Ting Wu detour.

Also, and I know the t-shirts were probably printed long before the event went back to RA, but I loved the irony of seeing a Nameless banner on the car on the front of the shirt.

Olympus recap, blue Volvo 240 piloted by Arnaud and limped along by me.
For our first rally we had the one main goal of to finish without any major offs or destroying the car. We did accomplish that. But we were plagued by some electrical issues with the fuel pump relay. Ran one stage with no power and not being able to go over 2500rpm. Missed two stages as we went back to service to scab something together.

Congrats on the finish. I thought I remembered seeing a driver rear lower shock mount loose when I was sweeping behind you on Deckerville? also thought the rear looked a little wishy-washy over some of the humps, maybe it was something else. either way, wasn't trying to crowd or rush you off stage, just wanted to keep you in visual

Don't worry about it, no pressure felt. The shock mounts stayed on. The shaft pulled out of the eye, something about a circlip failing and a press-fit. We were laughing hysterically when we were caught be sweep in about two miles (we were also passed by the Sonnet just before you showed up).

The car is getting new springs and shocks out back, as well as a few new bushings, maybe. Worn out bushings just give you more articulation right?!

It was a fantastic event that I can only wish we'd gotten to complete, but I totally blew the apex of a 90 left, cutting it far too tight and finding a hidden stump. Yes I am feeling quite stoopid. Despite this, we'll be back, probably in the same car. I thought at first the damage was terminal but now it's starting to look more hopeful. Will know more later today when I remove what's left of the skidplate. The gearlube dripping down onto it has me worried though...
One thing we learned, the Giant Bus beats the living crap outta the Trashed White Van when it comes to service rigs. It and the coffee machine are now mandatory rally requirements from here on out.

Jay... was that between inst 5 & 6 on Cougar?

Just wondering 'cause I heard a little chaos going on when you came down the hill and the rear tire was kicked out pretty good.

Anyone know what happened to the #938 car on SS12? They were doing good when they passed me but I saw they got a DNF.
