Woot - just in time to not have a running car to put them on....hmmm, maybe these should go on the goose?

In terms of what? Pics above of valve embedded into piston on #6 cyl and evidence of piston/valve interaction on #2. Motor has to come out....now just trying to decide what I actually want to do for getting it up and running again.

  • 328 motor - lose 40hp/20tq - would need to do OBD-II to OBD-I conversion
  • 328 motor with M3 cams - lose 20hp/10tq - would need to do OBD-II to OBD-I conversion and cam install
  • 328 motor with blower - gain 100hp/80tq - as above, but adding even more weight to the nose
  • 3.0L M3 motor - no power change - drops in but needs 'valve issue' addressed
  • 3.2L M3 motor - gain 0hp/15tq - would need to do OBD-II to OBD-I conversion
  • 3.2L E36 Euro M3 motor - gain 90hp/45tq -
  • 3.2L E46 M3 motor - gain 90hp/45tq - extensive wiring/ecu mods

I know what I want to do, but I also know I don't want to pay for it. Here's the general cost breakdown on the different choices:

328 motor is the least expensive and probably the only option I'd get done in time for the hillclimb next weekend. I've found a motor locally for $850 and Grant located a 328 at a junk yard where the motor would be $225. Could deal with cams later...or might have to do those now so as not to need a re-tune. Next up is probably the 328 with the blower since the kit is already sitting in my garage. That would involve some fab and parts costs as I don't have an IC for it.

Euro motors are sweet (can you say ITBs?!?) but prices are north of $4k and looking longer term if they need parts, those are more difficult to source. Benefit is that the wiring isn't all that difficult since they're the same vintage as the car.

So, that leads me to the US spec 330hp M3 engine. Searching on ebay I'm finding suitable motors for $3-4k and 'full swaps' including gearbox for $6k. There are two basic options for getting these running. First is using all the E46 wiring (throttle by wire...yuck!) and getting that to play with the E36 chassis harness. Second option is doing a standalone so it doesn't need all the E46 systems.

Dave

Wait a year or two and pick up the new all alloy turbo 4cyl out of a crashed 328. I bet it will remove 150lbs or more, and have as much torque as the 3.2 M motor

Why wait?
Dave's clean cut enough he could waltz into a Bring More Wampum place and be all flash and act like a playa and say "I want to trade my______________ in for one a dem new 4 cyl turbos.. I have a Pike Pike Evobitchi with 9 million horse powerz and i want sumpin wif some BALLZ," and get in rev it shky high (while making sure the car is in reverse and there's a demp truck behind) peeel out and slam it into something
so bad the car gets totaled... Of course he's have to jump out and scream "I had my foot on the BRAKES!!! Oh NOEZ! Unintended acceleration! It's a death trap! I'm suing! Oh my back!!!"

And wait for it to show up at the scrappie.

Simple!

Brou ha! ha!!!!!

Toyota 2AR+EFR Turbo=800 hp and 700 lb/ft of torque

Not too shabby! My 4g63 can make that much power on full boost and a 35r (just missed touching 700whp), but is a fair bit down on torque...though I'll bet that 80 shot would do wonders for spool and torque on mine.

Derik Nelson drove the Eaton Lift trucks factory Mk2 Escort a few months back and has now bought a 78 corolla, with plans to build the lightest 2wd high spec car possible. 2AR with a small turbo, Sadev 6spd seqential, and rear irs. should be pretty good.
