Derik Nelson drove the Eaton Lift trucks factory Mk2 Escort a few months back and has now bought a 78 corolla, with plans to build the lightest 2wd high spec car possible. 2AR with a small turbo, Sadev 6spd seqential, and rear irs. should be pretty good.

Cuz he needs something faster?!? Will be cool to see though!

we beat the Snot out of our 24v e30's on the street, I hate to see all the engine problems you've been having. Tons of Ideas to toss around on my end but I don't doubt after 18 pages its somewhat figured out or close.
Also Lurkin around trying not to stuff my foot in my mouth. nice car!

Our s50's under low boost like 8lbs would always break the number 6 piston, cracked from the bottom ring land to wrist pin bore. We thought maybe Pre Detionation along with a high limiter brought on from the tune was just to much. We also tried supertech *if I recall* pistons which cracked too.
I think someguys just have better luck since these non vanos m50's make big power with no problems other than driveline issues.
since your motor is N/A if its chipped possibly try a lower limiter? or is it just dropping valves in each incident?

In both cases engine rev limiter was set at 7,000rpm.

First motor dropped a valve in the #5 or #6 piston. It was the front exhaust valve that slipped out of its retainer and then got hammered into an S shape. Engine pushed it back up into the head and cracked the casting around the valve guide.

Not 100% sure what caused current issue. Marks on several pistons and a dropped valve head would seem to indicate that the engine skipped timing. Unsure if valve head could've fallen off and caused a timing skip? I don't remember missing a shift or downshifting too early on the last competition run I did with the car and the fact that I drove it onto the trailer makes me think it wasn't damaged on that run.

Mind boggling failures especially after a repair.

I came up with a new plan today.
Pull the 2.8L w/ S50 cams engine from the red car and put it into the white car.
Find a 2.5L engine to put into the red car and leave it bone stock as a rental/instructional car. Side bonus, comparable to 4040 and Goose cars.
Find a 2.8L engine to rebuild with the S50 cam out of the white car to have as a spare.

You're not good at minimizing work, are you? That plan involves tearing the engine out, putting it back into another car and then doing yet another motor install. I wanna be lazy!

Finishing the transmission swap in the red car will make that a rally-able car right away (has logbook, lights, etc.) and if I can get the seat adjusted to my liking, it'll be just fine for me to take out to a rally this fall.

Then when time/$ allows, I'll get the white car back up and running...with all that stupid extra crap that isn't needed. smiling smiley

I hadn't gotten to the part where you pay me to do all the above mentioned swaps.

Bought a 'new to me' engine this morning and some 50mm things showed up over the weekend. Also made some good progress on converting the red 328 coupe to a 3-pedal wonder.

John - before I pull apart the 40mm stuff...will the 50mm ones fit into the 40mm top hats? Assuming that the goal is to check the mounting clearances and camber with the centered mounts first...then see if we need something different? Suppose I should also check it out on a car with standard front control arms too, huh?

Until I get the offset top mounts you want done, the ideer was to use the original top mounts.. The aluminum for your offset stuff arrived Friday.
I will be sawing it up tonight probably.
