Been looking at motorcycle gauge clusters for a simple solution for the dash. 100 bucks or so for a chineese tach, speedo, water, and oil temp warning lights. I've got em bookmarked on the laptop if you are interested.

have hub adapters made for either the front or rears, CALL H&R, or a local machine shop.. 4 x whatever holes, tapered so the lug nuts sit inside the adapter/ spacer, drill whatever 5x holes, insert lugs, and presto... wheels fit, new found clearance, and awesome stance... it cant be a race car if its not stance'd... we ran 5x100 rally wheels on the RX8 with adapters, and on the orange cosworth powered capri.

I be sorry as a muthafucka I did, still sorry I did n' hustled ta peep what tha fuck I holla'd a lil' bit better, or at least try to.

i got stopped early today because radioshack doesnt sell the pins i needed for my connector. so once i figure that out... i can proceed.

anywho, AJ came over last night and we car'd hard. Big portion of wiring done, a dozen little tasks, oil in the transmission (getting Lucas stabilizer into a transmission when its 30 sucks...a lot). Header wrapped, intake holder thingy concocted (still needs the heat shield)...

and of course, there is coolant seeping, probably from the pump. because this car is the 3 headed hydra of problems.

Are you sure you can't find any place hotter to put that air filter? Maybe you could stick it up the tailpipe...

stock miata intake pipe puts it there. building a heat shield in addition to the header wrap. should be adequate afterwards

im picturing glowing red pipes, and melting plastic...hot smiley

if it were me, i would remove/ modify that plastic elbow, make it go straight to put the filter in front of the strut tower...

ive looked at it, the intake isnt really dimensionally friendly, its ovular, and its really flexible enough to shove anything round into. this arrangement seems okay for the stock miata guys.

The stock Miata had a tighter engine bay and fewer options. It also had a giant flapper door air flow meter that had to be mounted horizontally and not too close to the throttle body. That all forced Mazda to put the air filter box there, but they still didn't draw the air for that box from the exhaust manifold. The stock intake had a hose that did a 180 and pulled the air from behind the driver's headlight to get the coolest possible air.

I know using the stock plastic crossover tube seems like a nice shortcut that saved you some time, but it will probably hurt you in the long run.

You're not running an air flow meter, so you must be running some kind of programmable engine management. This means you're going to tune for whatever hot air you anticipate, but will have to run with whatever hot air you actually get. The difference in the two can be big. If the actual air is cooler than what you tuned for, you're leaving power on the table. If the actual air is hotter, you'll be pinging your little heart out and won't be able to hear it over all the gravel hitting the bottom of the car.

Find a hose that will fit your throttle body and use it to connect ANYTHING round. You can make intake pipes out of PVC or ABS drain pipe from Home Depot if you have to. My 200-hp Frankenmiata breathes through sewer pipe. Do whatever you have to do to get consistent cool air to your engine. It matters for power, it matters for cooling, and it matters for durability.

Just because a bunch of weenie stock Miata guys do it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Those goofballs don't rally their stock Miatas...

I know the internet is full of random unsolicited advice, so let me just clarify where my advice is coming from:
I won the CRS 2WD championship back in 2003. It is hot as balls here, so that means I must have dealt with real rally cooling issues.
I built and campaign the most successful endurance racing turbo miata in the history of duct tape, so I know a thing or two about these engines and how to break them.
I'm an engineer at Mazda. Actually, that last bit sounds impressive, but really means almost nothing...

Anyway, I fucking love your car and am surprisingly jealous of it. Do what you must to get it running, but be sure to move that filter before you do any final tuning and competition with it. It is so easy to do it right, there's no reason to do it wrong.
