You are getting on in years now gene, so am I so just to remind you this isn't "Gene's any old BMW Love Fest" or "Gene's wit and wisdom why SBC is the worlds greatest rally motor" Its Dereik"s E36 M3 with the S50B30US engine versus..." So all you guys especially Gene and Grant creaming your jeans on the "earth shatter" awesomeness of all these Beemers, all those cars you picked up for peanuts. They all came with the S50B30US, right?

The cheapest cars have the 2.5L or 2.8L which are 189 hp/181 lbft and 190/210 lbft respectively.
Addition of the M3 cam gets you to similar hp as the S50. The blocks are same between all three. Even if you start with the 2.5L you start with 189 hp and a few simple things, exhaust, intake, chip and you are over 200 crank. But what does this have to do with a Volvo 242? Grant Hughes |

Well Grant , you ignorant slut, it has everything to do with everything. It should be screaming obvious if you buy a cheap old Volvo, rewire it so the electric work 2 days in a row, rebuild the floor pan, add 4 link differential control arms and a panhard or watts linkage, have hubs or axles machined, get a new bell housing, rebuild a T5 trans, find 5.1 gears, find a good twin cam head, have the head rebuilt, find new performance cams, get the right turbo, the right engine management, intercooler and piping and all sorts of other grief you might be able to match the performance of a stock M3. But then you still need to match the performance of the Reiger suspension with the used inserts JV sells ( when he stays off the keyboard and actually does something..). Plain as day.
..and yes the stock grocery getter 3 series 6 banger is plenty powerful for the average guy to never really need more but we don't talk about that... Speaking of old rally cars. There was a Sonnet and a Cortina thru tech yesterday, pretty cool. I logged an old 122s last week also, very nice car. |

Simple comparison Grant... You and gene are blabbering such BS as it is incredible.. Gene saying some crap about Ramana's drive in the rental impressing the whole world" .... Derik and Hintz's cars are very good total cars and have a kick ass 240hp, 225 ft/lbs stock motor. THAT is evidently what makes them so "awesome"...., not its the same block" derp derp dude. Blocks don't make power Grant.. a 96 hp n.a. Mustang with some leaky carb has the same block as that Merkur rotting in the back of the shop... derp derp. I'm just trying to keep this on track as a DERIKS CAR AT DERIKS SPEC versus a 240, since that was the question and both you guys have been IMPLYING hard that just bolt some suspensders on and you'll "dominate" in ANY old dog of a 1200 buck bimmer.. And that is bussshit. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Been drinking this early in the morning Gene? This is getting bad... And are you trying to be funny with "used inserts' or are you trying to make some sorta statement..you may be stepping over a line there but I want to know what you're trying to insinuate. Well? Which i kind of thought was kind of funny. If that is generally preached about method of building a volva, why even worry about starting with a one! I say why not a K car! Free to nearly free, tons of spare parts, but do a 4 link and rear axle, some modernish front subframe, 240sx, 2nd gen rx7, something all in one basically, then run 4g63 turned 90 degrees!! I know a guy that makes t5 or t56 or w or R toyota bell housings for the narrow block, all the way up to the newer evo motors!! I say it could be the new US version of the escort!! And totally legal in the eyes of RA. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

Well here we are most of the way thru day 1.
Jardevalls Volvo blew a turbo last night, I'd guess he is as good as they get with Volvo prep. Watsons turbo VW blew a motor. Clarks turbo Merkur blew a head gasket. Guerins NA Volvo out with fuel pump related problems. Purple Panda out with blown motor. POS BMW in 2nd overall. There are lessons here, you need to look for them yourselves. |

If I wanted to work on cars that much I'd rally a Volkswagen! I think our shop Compact is going to stay four cylinder just for ease and to have a decent but not too crazy rental car. After that it may get a 2.8L or maybe the S50 block and 2.8L M3 cam'd head that could be built for rallying. The Merkur was WAY faster than Dave's M3 powered BMW during test days, at least when I was able to actually crank up the boost. Sadly I was only able to do that during test days and during events and rallies I had to leave it at 10 lbs of boost or it would dangerously overheat. I'd still say a properly built and driven Merkur is better than a similar spec BMW, but a simply built, near stock BMW on stage quickly and driven slowly is better than developing a drinking problem spending time in the garage for years working on something. I had the pleasure of calling Gene a toll to his face this morning... funny things like that can happen when you go to events! There is a certain, possibly perverse, joy in getting to see everyone at an event. Keith, Al, Sean, Derek, Dave Clark II, Troy from DirtFish, Grant Whiting, Manspeakers, saw Christy B but not Jim, I fixed Hintz's headlights on his BMW, helped on Arnauds Volvo fueling issue and saw countless rally friends. Thanks to all of them for making the event fun to be a part of.
Judd Hardy in his old Volvo finally 'got it' and is laying it down purty good! Go Judd and Kathy! Binzewskis in the old Leggy flying right along, I think it is still a flat 6 power car. basically no dust, one minute windows, rally stayed on time. Enough mush, back to the internet weenie sizing contest!! |

Until nahwatzel... Dust was brutal last night for most of the stage. First Rally: 2001 Driver (7), Co-Driver (44) Drivers (16) Clerk (10), Official (7), Volunteer (4) Cars Built (1), Engines Built (0) Cages Built (0) Last Updated, January 4, 2015

You can't keep that old girl down long. We were out again as soon as I rounded up some wire and spade connectors and figured out the in tank pump was actually working. Thanks for the help and advice Gene, it was much appreciated. We did the rest of the rally with the fuel pump relay bypassed with a wonderful 4-wire jumper. If it wasn't for that stupid shock poking a hole in the tire on Nahwatzel, we would have finished... Maybe. |

This morning on Cougar, 2 minute gaps, at Instruction 16 we had no breeze, no wind, just dust hanging in the air. The inside of my Bronco needs a bath... Just as an asides Gene, scared of a 283 with cherry bombs? Get serious, the only car that has ever scared me was when I was 7 or so years old, it was my mothers Lotus Cortina, with her driving...
