I know your kidding Grant... but I learned Canada had a rally scene reading the Toronto Star in the early 90's. A write up on Pines, and how the snow had been the equalizer. It was a pivotal moment in my life... Damn wish I had never picked up that paper. Matt |

Now the costs are in line with Canadian licences! How wonderful! Too bad the Canadian licences bring with it a staff that can sit down with Federal bureaucrats and work thru revisions to laws on seatbelt to allow harnesses to be accepted as legal substitutes........ the national series can support itself. Its all going to be subaru anyway, why cant THEY pay for the extra exposure. Their claim that they will provide for value to obtain sponserships is certainly not going to extend down to the regional events with any series impact, especially for 2wd classes.

Subaru doesn't likely make enough off of rally in the US to pay for toilet paper at corporate HQ...they do pay for a lot of after event banquets, worker bags, subsidize event costs and even offer serious discounts to someone buying a new Sube. Subaru sees a much better ROI at track days, car shows or drift events. Those people seem to have more disposable income. Subaru likely does much better money wise with the snow rec crowd as a couple hundred million people ski in the world. I rarely see anyone in the rally community rockin a new Sube. Rally does little to nothing for Subes annual sales and profit. Kia sales are sky rocketing. I've never seen an Optima on stage... Why should anyone give a shit about regional 2wd rally competitors? No one markets to old cars (other than JV). No money to be made from old cars at a manufacturers level. How come thousands of guys race every Saturday night in some form of 'stock' car without support of GM or Ford and seem to survive quite well? How many old 2wd regional cars even get washed or waxed with regularity? Or decent paint jobs? Or put on a show worth watching? I really dislike the caste system rally seems to develope. We're all racers irregardless of the 1040 bottom line. |

but if no one cares for the 2wd competitors, why should i have to pay MORE for the national people? I would rather them just lie and tell me its due to rising administrative costs not that other people will find benefits.
more over, if rally isn't a driving force for sales, then the idea of sponsorship is somewhat moot. Meaning the added benefits they mention are perhaps a hollow statement to make the increase in costs a softer subject. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/11/2011 10:36AM by Gravity Fed. |

I tried to have a nice looking, well put together car, and get it sideways at all available locations, and sometimes where not appropriate! but I see where you are coming from Gene. I am pretty let down when I take a close look at some of my friends rally cars. I spent like 6 hours scrubbing the dirt from the INSIDE of Gottliebs Honda when I did the re-prep, and it was not on the list of things to do.
To the topic at hand, the reasons for the license increase is quite the cop out. We also had to buy a separate rally cross license from RA last year. so, I bought 2 RA licenses. Lame. |

Gene. Do you think the paint difference between now and 15-30 years ago is more that people won't do their own paint jobs. Either fear of liability if overspray hits their neighbors fence if they paint outside or fear of the EPA for not having a blah blah whatever they require? Or is it just easier to go to Maaco and spend $400 but then who wants to go to Maaco and spend $400 so the car never gets painted and no one is really there to say, hey, you can paint two cars with a $100 in paint and a Harbor Freight HVLP paint gun. Sure, you might have some orange peel, but it'll look good from 10 feet away or in pictures. I thought my car looked pretty good considering I painted it in a dirt lot with dirt cheap paint. Sure, get up close and you can tell it's done at home but not from a few feet away or at speed. |

I painted my car (parts of it) outside in a parking lot. i had one neighbor come out and move his car .. i did already park in a far corner so i wouldn't over spray onto other cars...
it sucked and turned out pretty crappy (looks fine in the rally pics though) $100 to do it correctly (or closer to) hmmm... i might look into that now that i have a garage... hehehe |

volunteer championship? now that's a cool idea... (even if you were in jest)
Give each volunteer 1 point for each coefficient of rally worked. Give each volunteer 1 point for picking the winner of each rally day. step 2 ??? step 3 profit! but back to keeping it serious. have some prizes and/or trophies for the top 5 volunteers . if there's a boost in volunteers and little to no costs.. it could be a worthwhile idea... ![]() |
