I have a simple rule for buying a volvo 240: $150 per door. 242 gets $300, 4 door $600, wagons get $750. If it has a running turbo motor, add another $150.

Beyond that you are throwing away money.

I would swap the price of the 2 door/4 door, but you are right on the money. I have seen interiors at the J/Y that nice.

I think ive learned to link. This is the best Ive found so far, but its sadly a wagon, Would rather have a sedan.

So, if Ive decided to build myself, Do any of you know of/have a running 240 that isnt a stones throw from the pacific? Runninng enough to make it back to this coast, preferably...

I take it, that its pretty unaminious over here that 240 is the way to go.

Edit- how bad is a auto-manual swap?

Huh oh, you asked John about suspension......here we go...But, honestly he's the right guy; you'll be pretty happy.

You sound like you have your feet on the ground Bob, and have some car skills, so IMO, you'll be OK. Your cage skills assessment seems good; you can contact me if you like; I'm on the east coast. If you are doing RNY as that one event, then you need to also talk to Walter who is tech guy for that event. (It's an independent, self-sanctioned event.)

Can't help you on the garage and car-on-the-street thing; my sympathies. Glad I live in the boonies...

As for auto to manual trannie swap, I am not a Volvo guy but have done it on a couple cars. You in all likelihood will need:
- Pedal set from a manual car
- Master and slave clutch cylinder set and a line
- Possibly different cross member and driveshaft
- Flywheel, bolts, clutch throw-out arm, etc.
- Worst case is if you have to: mount up the clutch master cylinder on the firewall, put a hole in the tunnel for the shifter, and mod the tunnel a bit (but ususally an auto is a bit larger, so a manual goes right in)
- May have to figure out how to bolt up a different crossmember to the floor if the holes are not all there from the factory

The easiest is to go to a u-pull-it j-yard and find one with a dead motor and pull out all the transmission and clutch related parts. It's typically not a huge challenge. But a Volvo person would know.

As for the suspension stuff, a yes or no would do well... Dont want to paint myself into a corner.

Just a particularly nice color 240 showing they don't have to be boring beige or tan or some hideous boring color.

And suspension, naturally there great suspension options.
For only $7400, plus airfreight and customs you can get Sellholm Bilstein 50mm upside down struts and rear shocks and springs.

For only $2200 you can get Sellholm upside down 41 or 40mm Bilstein front struts.
I've seen the Sellholm stuff, its definitely old school but first class.
By old school I mean the strut tube is welded directly into the bottom forging for the spindle. Non-separable.

Then there's this place out in Sleezattle that makes 40,41, and 50mm upsidedown Bilstein suspension that would cost you around $2000 plus some sheet metal mods for coilovers in the rear, and there are options at the front for fixed old school or the Sooooooper Bitchin removable so you can unbolt the strut just like a VW or Sub-a-rat.
Its also first-class stuff, and ironically it was Janne Sellhom in Sweden who told the guy in Sleezattle that he ought to just make it rather than spend crazy money on freight.

Our own JVL has made, or does make an A-dapter kit for the T5 trans to Volvo block, then you can have all the sweet ratios, and a trans that shifts like a dream.

Dana 30 R&P new for $150. Weld the diff, do a 5.3 or so, and run a NA motor to start. Build up your nice Turbo motor when you get your time in, and add huge smiles.

The Volvo really is a car you can grow into. I will build one someday for rally. I swore after I wadded my XR I would, but alas, I wadded it a bit too soon, and another XR is the least expensive option for me at this time. But that is OK because it is a silly easy car to drive, easily a top 2wd car, and beyond reliable. 1st 4 rallies in the XR, I washed it and changed the oil.

people always forget to look in the auto parts section of craigslist for donor shells. you can find some really good deals that way.

reading about all the gearing options for the volvo really makes them seem like a very logical car choice. i would paint mine orange.

Hey John, what's the price foe one of those A-dapter thinga-ma-jigs run? I'm starting to loose the love for the M46 and T-5 are plentiful in these here parts.
Also, can you get me some volvo piston squirters and banjo bolts? The B230 is nearing completion and I'm a little worried about high compression and boostzzzz.
I'd call you but you take ~4hrs-sideways8hrs, and I'm stuck in a computer lab until all these final projects get finished up.
