That black car is beign sold by the same guy as the Alabama one I posted. I looked at it first, but the aluminum pop rivet patches on the floors kinda turned me off, esp seeing all the other work, or "work" this guy did.

Not necessarily; I've seen 'em where the seats and carpets were dried out quickly and cleaned, and they did not smell. Bu the moisture is in the harnesses and connnectors, and dirt and crud is in the panels, doors, boxes, etc. That absorbs moistrue, and holds it aganst the metal, thus the odd rust.

Check the dates be sure I am right.

Mark is very correct about flood cars not smelling. A shop vac and a couple fans usually make the smell go away. Many of todays plastic backed carpets even keep the water underneath and hidden.

I'm not convinced there is any such thing as 'one small rust hole' . Usually they just happen to be the size of a quarter also.

It pays to be pessimistic when it comes to rust.

1989 Volvo 240 DL. 252,xxx miles. 5 speed manual transmission shifts smooth. Body in great shape, usual small dings and spots. 4cyl Engine runs fine. Great car, was my daily driver for the past 3-4 years. Passed recent inspection in January.

ONLY PROBLEM: hard to start every once in awhile. I've spent many hours trying to figure out what the issue is. Although, when it starts, it runs fine and when it is used regularly it generally doesn't have a problem starting.

Well right now I'm just using it to drive around the city, as I'll probably do later on anyway. I've got some friends up in CT who will do the welding at some point this summer as well as installing anything. I'm admittedly pretty lacking in the mechanical knowledge department. So it's basically going to be a cheap as possible paid for in beer car hopefully in time to do some of the Rally New York events up in the catskills. It's pretty smooth up there and would be a good low stress environment to get some experience. Otherwise, just trying to get it all over to other events up in Vermont, NH and Maine once we get it sorted out.

So, to you Volvo guys... I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a manual car... Am I wasting my time, Would I be better off just getting one of the local, cheap automatics?

Jimmy- Thats pretty cool. I was planning similar stuff, but doing the work myself... I dont know to many people who do car stuff So I am kinda on my own.

If you ever need a hand with some stuff, let me know.

How about the manual-trannied car in PA? Too pricey?

You can do the conversion, but I would be getting an auto trans car pretty cheap to be able to offset the manual conversion. Have you looked around at j-yards to see how much issue it is to get a manual trans and all the bits?

It's kinda hard to advise you at this point. Lesse: you need to work outside, so it's best to keep the modification steps to small steps so that you can complete them in a relatively short time. A trannie conversion should fall into that class if you have some car skills. Even if you get a manual trannie, I would pull it out and put in a new clutch anyway.

Bob, you gonna want a GM T5 in it so don't fret the auto-tragic thang.
The pedal assembly comes out in minutes so swapping a manual trans pedal set is maybe 20 minutes-30 at most. I can pull one and send it from any of the dozen or so that are routinely at the Pull-a-part.

I'd say go from the best shell at the lowest possible price cause weld rust is no fun, I did too much of that between 94-2000 when I was up in fawkin Bawstin.

Don't worry turbo or not. Shell, everything starts with the shell.

Now ther T5 you want is from a V8 Camaro or Firebird or whatever BUT only the V8----unless its like 50 bucks. You find a $50 V6, grab it and then we'll get ya a "2.95 first" gearset for $380 and you turn it into an opportunity to swap the gears AND freshen the bearings and synchros, or "snatch victory outta da jaws of your feets" or whatever the cliche is..
Ya find 2 GM boxes, get one for Jimmy and have a beer and bearing swap party. T5s are straightforward gearboxes, the 2.95 first gearset is the best ratios you'll find short of a real close ratio (or an EVObitchi box)

Now personally I think the round headlight cars look better balance and not "tarted up" compared to the later thangs with those portable TVs for headlights, but that can be done anytime with a few parts and a couple of hiours. Main thing is to grab SOMETHING and start throwing away inside junk. If you and Jimmy are doing cages same time, that should certainly ease the costs since it is no way twice as long to do 2 as 1.
So there a good reason to get together and do some jawing and planning.

Note that Volvo stopped importing the 2 door in maybe '82 so there's a plus for the 4 door cause they sold those thru 92 or so. More rally-ready spares.
