Anything that applies to the Volvo applies equally to the Xratty, and set up decently they would both have the same turbo, the same clutch, gearbox, calipers, disc, diff, final drive ratio inserts and rear shocks

Both the motors are 96 x 80mm 2300s
Both have iron flywheels but soon there will be a good steel flywheel (some of these piccies is less than 2 hours old

Xratties have forged pistons stock, Volvos have better rod/stroke ratio and potential for huge improvements at eventual rebuild time...

Xratty has better steering stock--2.6 turns of very crisp steering, but we can use the Xratty ZF rack in the 240 with extremely minimal work.

The Xratty IS a much better car, but none of us are so good the difference would be a factor.

Don't see why not. But as in everything the cost is related to the series or production run.
And thinking like I do, always on a longer time frame, the cost of the whole thing is measured against the cost of theoretically rebuilding one BMW box which usually have flat bizarre ratios (really it is understandable since their home market is do important and in the ol' Bundesrepublik we need cars that can putter thru a small town then flat fly on a motorway, so for the high top speeds they gear them crazy tall, like some of the damn things were 2.83 axle ratio for flat out, high speed cruise, and combine that with granny low like 4.25 fist gear, for in town puttering) and are not the strongest built and are filthy expense to rebuild.
So even at short run prices a good strong T5, with good ratios, and bellhousing mods would doubtless be less than the cost of rebuilding a poxy box that's crap anyway!

Damnit, this isn't making my build any cheaper. Stop making sense! BTW, the general rule I've found on BMW boxes is to just buy another used one, as rebuilds are just too expensive. I picked up a spare for ~$300 not too long ago.

The BMW box is much shorter and more compact than the T-5. But I bet it could be made to work. Eventually. Dave could definitely use a shit, taller, shorter, lower number, whatever that means. Red line at 12 MPH in 1st. Though it is fun to bang through three gears in a few hundred yards.

Just train the hand to never stick it in 1st.

Lust for fin:
The Getrag 262/265 box that was OEM on some bigger Beemers and I think on Jags was what EVERYBODY in roadracing GpA was using in the mid 80s.
By default it was like a "spec' box.
BMW, Volvo turbo, TWR Rover V8, and Ford in the Cossies all used the same box
1st gear was "higher" like 2.35 vs road car 3.95 in a Volvo or 4.25 in a BMW or even the 3.35 in a stock Xratty, top was 1:1

Just like the T5 the boxs' torque rating goes up significantly with the first gear ratio, so those 2.35 GpA boxes were safe for 400+ ft/lbs o torque, but not the poxy 4.25 ratio thangs

The box itself ain't so short, its all the tail housing stuff.

In the BMW for Dave, it could be that the tailhousing from a S-10 would be better cause the stick is at the FRONT end of the tailhousing and that might be better than reaching beind the front seats every shift.

i imagine that with some lexan and strategic sheet metal removal a wagon could be made just as light as a sedan and haven even more utility.

I have a 1991 volvo 240 looking to go to a better home, its got 178,000 runs and drives.
the not so good
-needs front right control arm
-needs waterpump gasket (leaks a bit)
-power steering leaks aswell
-needs a battery
-needs headlights (needless to say my rigged ones wont pass inspection)
-your going to need a trailer to get it out of here, it was kind of sketchy driving it to my house

the better than not so good
-IT RUNS!
-tranny fluid was kinda changed
-no rust
-has undercoating
-has handpainted racing stripes (dont worry they wash off)
-its really cheap!
-bunch of parts in a box in the trunk

now look at those pictures and tell yourself you dont want one of those!
asking 350 obo email first then phone numbers or else i get a million question while at work which my bosses dont like to much.

Brian- If you'd like, sure. It would be a hell of a drive home, and towing isnt gonna work for me, so it has to run well enough to get back down to NY.

John- I like that one too, john, but still issues with towing. The fact the car has no headlights, but flashlights and that it was "sketchy driving it back here" worries me that he was doing some kinda stupid crap with it. I still emailed 'em
