Wo0t! I actually did something today. Mostly buttoned a bunch of cosmetic stuff back into place, but it was still progress. It looks like a Galant again, rather than a junker.
I'm going over to Moose's place Weds night after work to help him make some progress on his car (which could very well still be on the trailer from Prescott). If I can talk him into letting me borrow his flare tool, I can get the brake lines under my hood connected back up with the new hardware I bought this afternoon. Come the weekend, I have a couple 4G63 DSMers coming over to make sure this Gaylant has a running engine in it before Monday comes back around. God, if I'm not scared to say this, but my Galant is scheduled to be running within 7 days... :O Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest |
I think of all the cars I've had, the metal on the Honda CRX I first rallied was the worst.
I'll try and give you a call in the next couple of days John. Anyone have pics of how they reinforced their front strut towers? I have some ideas on mind, but want to see if I'm on the right track. Cheers! John http://www.lastditchracing.com http://www.triplecaution.us |

Burned a few meters of wire through the new Lincoln. Seam welded some stuff, tore the fr susp and engine crossmember off so I can clean, seam and deal with any rusty spots.
Now if I can just figure out how much of the cage will pass new RA/FIA rules/guidelines and suggestions, I'll be in good shape!! She's screamn' fer eet! Rallyho Mike White http://www.facebook.com/rallyhomotorsports |

Not much last night. Wire wheeled and POR-15ed some little rust spots. Mananged to set off the smoke detectors burning through the undercoating...neato. I need to figure out how to clean/degrease inside a not so crappy garage. Simple Green and a catch pan? Any ideas?

Mike, what are you working on? The Saab or something else?

Got the engine 95% ready to go. Still need to swap out an O2 sensor and source a breather fitting for the valve cover. That's about it. Maybe one more clip for a fuel injector harness connector and it's good to go.
EDIT: (For Moose's peace of mind.) Engine has NEW - water pump, spark plugs, plug wires, belts, hoses, hose clamps, and TOB. Timing belt tensioner was soaked in oil, compressed/recompressed numerous times to verify smooth, consistant function, and painted black before being installed. Balance shafts are still there, but I've got the BSEK for later on. In the meantime, Bshafts are verified to be in-phase and the timing is, as one DSMer put it, "Titties and Beer." My GS-T engine came with an external oil cooler. Although we didn't R/I it to the GVR4, I have the oil filter housing with the fittings for the lines set aside for later install on the new engine, which I anticipate needing to be here inside of six months or so. Around 0800hrs tomorrow, I'll be removing/inspecting the fuel pump and draining the tank. It's had the same half a tank of "gas" for the 2-3 years it's sat dead. Probably has a nice bouquet by now, although the finish might be a tad bitter. (Poor wine/alcohol joke. Sorry.) 0900hrs, I will be paying Moose a visit to borrow a line flaring tool to finish the ABS deletion job he and I started back on Labor Day (delay = totally my fault). Maybe he'll have said breather fitting and injector clip just lying around in his garage...? By noon, we aim to have the tranny stabbed and the whole shebang going back into the chassis. By sunset, I hope to be driving my fucking car for the first time ever to QuickTrip for a fresh tank of 91 octane and then to the carwash to be freed from it's dusty veil. Wish me luck, fellas. Gonna be a busy day. Brian Driggs | KG7KCA | PHX, AZ | 89 Pajero alterius non sit qui suus esse potest Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/02/2006 08:52PM by DR1665. |
Spent a big day in the barn today welding up reinforcements to the sills in the Merkur and closing up holes. Two of us worked on the car, taking turns with the MIG, passing the torch literally back and forth when we got a bit tired.
We're nearly done with patching holes, cutting out rust and plating pieces that need it inside the car and ready to start on the interior seams. Love cleaning that nice goop off the seams with the wire wheel! :-) Cheers! John http://www.lastditchracing.com http://www.triplecaution.us |

No direct work on the rally car.
But I did go up to Laramie to buy this http://wyoming.craigslist.org/car/235323121.html which 5 minutes after it's arrival in Denver became this http://denver.craigslist.org/car/243211338.html Had it been a 5 speed... Have to love capitalism. I did drill the holes for the rear suspension mounts on the STAs, burnt the shit out of my arm with some schlag welding the mounts, and thought more on how I was going to get the JVAB strut lower spring seats that are superbly siezed broken free so I can bring them back up to a proper level. Ya John. 900 shell. It's in the ugly phase right now...nothing looks, smells or tastes right after I spend two hours working on it. It will probably have it's lid zipped off for roof diagonals before christmas.
Say, who can write a log book in Maine? She's screamn' fer eet! Rallyho Mike White http://www.facebook.com/rallyhomotorsports |
Mike, I know exactly what you mean. We're in the ugly phase as well. :-)
No one in Maine can logbook that I know of. Quite easy to get a car a CARS logbook in Quebec. We'll be building our hydraulic tubing bender shortly after Xmas. If you need pipe bent, we might be able to do it for you. :-) Cheers! John http://www.lastditchracing.com http://www.triplecaution.us |

CARS logbook ehhh....hmm, interesting concept.
Brett is coming up in a couple of weekends with a benders and steel is on the truck from some online place, due in next week. Roof bars, some sill bars, finish up the rear legs to the upper shock mounts..ummm, taco gussetts..what else. Anyway, I'm trying to follow the pictures on the FIA/RA thing. She's screamn' fer eet! Rallyho Mike White http://www.facebook.com/rallyhomotorsports |
My current open class car is a canadian logbooked car. As long as you hold a Canadian National license, you can logbook it there. Just be aware that you must comply to RA rules if you compete in their events.

Did you see the version I made with the appropriate diagrams in text with the FIA garbage. It's easier to read.
