Uh-oh. Sarcasm meter...going...crazy...
Dammit. The needle bent. Now I'll never be able to detect sarcasm properly. Picked up the head+cams from the shop doing the porting. Cams are matched to the new flow and designed for torque. Hope it works out. We'll see. Picked up the rebuilt transmission. The Gripper didn't fit right so I went with a Quaiffe. This kinda sucks. I'm not a fan of Torsen-types for rally. We'll run with this for awhile and see how it goes, but I'm looking at a KAAZ for the next gearbox rebuild. One way or the other, I should be able to give a detailed report on a VW Motorsports clutch-type vs Quaiffe Torsen-type in the next couple of months. This weekend I'll be putting the engine back together. Mmmm...2.1l 16v instead of my old 1.8l 8v. So long Production, hello Group 2. Self-righteous douche canoe |

My goal will be to make sure the drive train brakes etc. are all working right, and reliable. The upside to this is I don't have to get all the rally specific stuff (sump guard etc.) done until after. Also don't have to have it street legal, certified, e-tested, insured, logbooked. I hope to do some stage testing too, once all the rally stuff is done, a co-worker has 300+ acres with logging roads that he'll supposedly let me use. -Martin. |

When you put the case together, there's a shim on the bottom, and then you do some calculating to figure out what to shim the top. With the bottom shim in place and NO top shim, the diff was wedged solid when the case was closed. We could've taken out the the bottom shim and shimmed it on the top only (this is what Tom @ Gripper suggested), but that would've thrown the center off.
I'll probably end up taking the diff apart and take some measurements and compare it to a stock diff and see if I can figure out what the dealio is, but I don't really have the time to do that right now so we tossed the Quaiffe in. We'll see. Self-righteous douche canoe |

We'll see. Duuuuuuude, you need to get a couple of inner stubbie axle thingies including the flanges. On one, weld a big herking nut, like a 32mm or whatever. The other weld something like a bar so you can bite the bar in the jaws of a vise. Now screw the diff down and maybe even put the ring gear on if the diff has a split ring gear flage, that is to say if the diff loads the bits on that end and its split (like a Ford Escort or Saab 96 diff) Now grab your torque wrench and start winding and pulling, and note when the diff turns before the wrench clicks. Then report. This clear? Some initial preload, the diff "locked solid" UNTIL say 90-135 ft/lbs torque applied isn't bad. And very small changes in shimming can change the preload by shitloads, and no big deal at 020 or 030 diff side to side in the shimming. And yes I'm familiar with the Gripper diffs, smae stuff as ever but a little nicer. Gotcha. Well, all except the part about the split ring-gear flange. This one's solid and I'm not sure what the split one's supposed to do.
I have another junk gearbox here (8v longbox) that I can cannibalize for parts for the preload tester. The biggest problem is that I'm sort of tight on time for the next couple of months, so I may not get around to it until mid-Nov or so. Self-righteous douche canoe |

All that means is, the same bolts that hold the ring gear to the diff, are the bolts that hold the halves of the diff case together. My Maz-dog is like that. Removed rear subframe bushings and instaled the alloy ones.
Fixed the lose wires making the map lights flicker. Welded plates under rear lower control arms. Tightened the rear end bolts that were coming lose. Charged the battery. Unbent the big ass gouge on the sumpguard. Ziptied the flashlight pouch. Replaced the Peltor, not due to malfunction, I have been using the same one since 1983, I retired it out of respect. New one has audio out. Dicked with the camera and recorder, still no audio. Got done at 3:30 AM Cheers M.Samli Phoenix AZ Gaylant VR4 EVO III GSR (Stolen) Rallies are no place for traitors |

Installed surge tank/collector in the cell and tested. Washed car cover. Laid under car and looked at it...Grant I know you know what I am talking about here. Found a new radiator leak. Unable to find coolant leak around heater lines. Thought about moving seat back 2 inches.
Gave up and loaded dirtbike in van for a ride Sunday morning. Thanks To: Billygoat Racing "Smokin' since 1977" |
